The Story

http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/n-z/strash/strash_shot1s.jpg (http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/n-z/strash/strash_shot1l.jpg) Liquor store owner Ed Kevin Simmons finds a case of liquor behind a sealed up wall in his store. He has no idea why the booze was there or where it came from. He decides to sell it to the local bums for $1.00 each to make some money off the liquor. As the bums start to purchase and drink the booze we learn that this is some sort of toxic booze that melts people away when they drink it or come in any sort of contact with it.

http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/n-z/strash/strash_shot2s.jpg (http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/n-z/strash/strash_shot2l.jpg) The rest of the film follows the lives of some of the bums and throughout we get to see plenty of melting scenes as more and more bums drinks the toxic booze. The main bums are Fred (Mike Lackey), his younger brother Kevin (Bill Chepil), and their friend Burt (Clarenze Jarmon). We follow their lives in the junk yard, which is ruled by the master bum, Bronson. Bronson is an a crazy Vietnam veteran who is after Fred throughout most of the film because Fred owes him money. Fred is also giving his younger brother Kevin shit throughout most of the film for liking a girl named Wendy (Jane Arakawa) who works at the junkyard and has taken a liking to Kevin.

We get to see a nice throw up scene - after the cop beats up a hitman he purposely pukes on him .... nice. One of the final confrontations is between the copy and crazy Vietnam veteran Bronson.

Man, this movie sure was strange. The acting was poor and the plot was practically nonexistent, but there are a number of humorous scenes throughout the film. Probably the most humorous being when Bronson cuts off another bums' penis and a whole group of bums start to play 'keep-away penis'. In what one would normally think a horrific scene this is actually quite a humorous scene. Even the bum with the missing penis manages to add to the humor as he runs around chasing his penis that is being tossed about. Quite funny...

Image Quality

http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/n-z/strash/strash_dvds.jpg (http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/n-z/strash/strash_dvdl.jpg) The transfer is in full frame 1.33:1 which I believe is the original ratio it was filmed in. I've been unable to confirm this but it certainly appears so. The image quality itself was quite good. There were a few scratches and blemishes that appeared throughout the film but overall the transfer was clean. Very few speckles as well. The colors seemed a bit faded but I suspect that is just the result of being a low budget movie where even the original print had faded colors.

Sound

They really tease you here. They start the DVD with a Dolby Digital 5.1 intro even though the film itself is in Stereo. I know there are other DVDs that do this too, and I'll be pointing them out in my reviews. Seems kind of silly to me.

The DVD has a German and English dialogue track, as well as German and English subtitles. I heard no problems with the sound - both music and dialogue were clear and audible.

Supplemental Material

http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/n-z/strash/strash_menus.jpg (http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/n-z/strash/strash_menul.jpg) Theatrical trailer. There's also a filmography for director Jim Muro that is included on the DVD itself and as part of the insert.

Final Thoughts

Gore fans should be pleased by this movie. There are plenty of gore scenes throughout the film. Mostly people melting away or exploding after they drink the toxic booze. The effects aren't half bad either. It's hard to categorize this film. It's sort of a horror-comedy I suppose. It almost doesn't belong in the horror category but I think because of all the gore scenes it is.

It's definitely an entertaining film. It's something I'd recommend most people see, at least for the unique humor that it has.
