Was reading this article with George Feltenstein, the Senior Vice President in charge of Warner Home Video's classic catalog, and saw Kong mentioned..

This is awesome news. King Kong (1933) is one of the original movies that spurred my lifelong love of film.

I'll be buying this release, regardless of the pricetag. "Niche" or not.

  4. I totally agree. I love King Kong and I will buy it and add it to my collection of DVDs. I remember watching King Kong when I was little and it's one of the movies that made me have my fascination with movies that I do.

Everybody thinks we held off because Peter Jackson is remaking the movie, but that's just a coincidence.

    Actually, it's a coin$iden$e.

By the way, Kong - albeit, of course, in an unrestored (though clean and pleasant-looking) version, has been available on DVD for a long time, accompanied by the "'Twas beauty killed the beast" documentary.

Are you speaking of the R2 version? I never could find it here and was about to order it from AmazonUK when the news of the upcoming R1 version hit.

I have the R2 release,so have had tis for quite some time too. For a film of this age, the R2 looks great. I wonder if THAT was the element they were looking for?

It's unthinkable not to have this on a collection, imo. It's just one of those cases where some R1ers act as though it's somehow rare, when in fact it just means it's not in their region. It's easy to get, and I paid less than 10 bucks for it.

I might buy the new release, depends on extras and such. Since I have it though, it's not a "Must buy" for me, it's just something I'll get around too eventually.

Well, above I wrote: "I might buy the new release, depends on extras and such".

Having just read this at Fangoria's site:

Let me just say - I'm now going to be first in line :)

That collector's edition is easily now my most anticipated DVD release of this year. All those sweet extras, plus Mighty Joe Young and Son of Kong too! I'll be in heaven when I get my mits on this!

This is the best news of the year for DVDs. I'm just hoping that I can buy the tin edition plus SOK and MJY as seperate releases, otherwise I'll have to buy the 2-disc set twice just to get those 2 movies. Son of Kong rocks as does Mighty Joe Young. And you can get a poster replica by mail with the tin purchase? Too fuckin sweet.

Son of Kong is cool, until the weird ending. The couple just seem to be a little too damn happy considering what just happen, as if they only cared about the money, they didn't seem to mourn poor little Kong all that much. The funny looking Kong just sacrificed himself so that they could live, and they didn't seem too sad about it. Unlike the ending of King Kong who killed everything is sight, yet the people around him still were sad that the big guy was dead.

Of course this is great news, Son of Kong and Might Joe Young have only been on the back burner as far as we had known. I hope they include the fire sequence of Might Joe Young in hand color as the original was.

But... Will Might Joe Young have the same crew doing commentary? I can only imagine so since it'd be pretty stupid not to, but then you never know. It's also too bad they never got commentary with Fay Wray when they had the chance, but then there's nothing they can do about that now.

From what I understand by reading digitalbits.com, Son Of Kong and Mighty Joe Young will be sold separately as well.
