This was kind of a crappy year in horror.

I voted for Phantasm because it's my favorite but I think Alien was superior. Then Fucli's Zombie (his best film) in 3rd place.

After that... slim pickings, very slim.

Funny, I was just thinking the opposite that I never realized how good of a year it was.

    Alien
    Brood, The
    Cannibal Holocaust
    Fascination
    Nosferatu
    Phantasm
    Salem's Lot
    Tourist Trap

All good, but nothing can compare to a topless scuba diver being attacked by a zombie which in the process is attacked by a shark.

    Lucio Fulci's masterpiece Zombi 2!

OP!! Forgot about Salem's Lot. And I haven't seen Herzog's Nosferatu yet. You're right, I underestimated it. A little. But some of your list I already mentioned. Or are just overrated.

I liked Cannibal Holocaust, I love The Brood and I REALLY love Phantasm, but absolutely nothing can come close to Alien.

Exactly what I voted, and my reasoning. Alien is a better film and a must own. But Phantasm is just such a brilliantly bizarre film, with so many hooks into my memory, it was the must pick choice. Zombie was the only other film to give me pause in choosing.

The Brood and Nosferatu could easily have sprinted to the finish if the above monoliths weren't blocking the path.

The Brood is overrated. Though I think it's better than his other films Shivers, Scanners, and Naked Lunch.

Alien leads us into the film as more of a 2001 thing, marvel at the production design and all the futuristic looking sets, so it's very boring at first and takes awhile to get going. Phantasm starts right away, has a lot more atmosphere, and never has a boring moment. It's more consistent, though Alien delivers bigger shocks and much better acting. Which in the end is the ruling factor, really. And it's scarier, no question about that.

It's hard to choose between Zombie and Alien. I think I 'll have to choose Zombie since I have great memories of seeing it at the drive-in as a kid, and I didn't see Alien until it was on HBO.
