I'll go with Fright Night 2, Pet Semetary is a close second.
My favorite was Friday the 13th Part VIII. But I think the best of the year was clearly Warlock. I also want to make sure to put in a good word for After Midnight. I thought that movie was quite good.
Haven't seen I, Madman yet. Is that DVD supposed to be fullscreen or is that an MGM fuck-up?
Again a no brainer IMO, SANTA SANGRE.
There are many faves of mine from this year, but I'd have to say that I think Puppet Master deserves more love than it generally gets. One of the all-time best direct-to-video films... not that that's a particularly great feat, but it's a solid low-budget horror film for sure.
Not a memorable year for horror. Voted for Halloween 5 even though it was a step down from Halloween 4. I've never seen Santa Sangre, but am very curious.
I clearly have to see I, Madman.
Had to go with Halloween 5 - I liked the whole intrigue of trying to figure out who the mark of thorn guy was that broke Michael Myers out of jail.
Society is friggin' weird - haha.
Easy choice for me, Pet Sematary. The sister with Spina Biffida (sp.) always creeps me out.
Went with Warlock, it was fun. Kinda imaginative too.
DEAD CALM was the best acted I saw but it straddles the fence between "horror" and "thriller".As a straight up horror film PET SEMATARY is good (not quite up to the book, but solid).AFTER MIDNIGHT is worth a look for anthology fans who may not have caught up to it.
I was thinking about voting for one of the sequels: A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5, FRIDAY THE 13TH 8, or HALLOWEEN 5 but in the end I went with the one I saw in theaters and absolutely loved: Warlock
Boy, there's some crap there.
However, two really stand out. Thumbs up to Dead Calm. You would be forgiven for expecting a lot less given the cast, but it really delivers, imo.
However, SANTA SANGRE is something else.
You've got the UK VHS - buy the UK DVD! It's astonishing!
I had to go with Halloween 5 - sure, it has continuity issues, but viewed on its own terms, it's technically accomplished, even a little inventive in terms of the camera work. And it manages to scare me, something which few late 80's horror films are capable of.
FRIGHT NIGHT 2 great underrated sequel IMO.
Pet Sematary, but I, Madman was a lot of fun. Not a good year for horror.
I voted Pet Sematary, it is very dark and disturbing to me still.
I'm a huge fan of the Halloween series but part 5 did nothing for me, especially after part 4 which I thought was fantastic.
Both the Friday and Nightmare films had run out of steam for me by this time too.
Bad year for horror - is this really the best from that year?
Santa Sangre was the best film...
HALLOWEEN 5. Just for those two clutz cops in it.
