    1. When Alison (Christina Raines) joins the party for Jezebel some old hag says that infamous line "black & white cat, black & white cake" (one of my favorite moments in The Sentinel). The same line is used and looped shortly after in Alison's dream. I know Jezebel was black and white and so was the cake but still, wtf and why? Is there a deeper meaning I missed?

    2. What was the deal with Alison's headache and neck pains?

    3.
Why exactly was Alison choosen to be the next Sentinel?

1: I think the "black and white cat, black and white cake" line may be to signify the battle between Heaven and Hell that is being conducted in the apartment complex. Black and white are the exact opposites of each other, just like Heaven and Hell and good and evil. Just wild speculation on my part anyway. It could just be a line they thought was catchy or creepy, both of which it is.

2: Not sure about the pains, but I'm guessing it has something to do with her being next in line for
    sentinel duties.
Then again, it could be just stress.

    3:
I think it had a lot to do with her earlier suicide attempt. It never reveals how all the previous sentinels were chosen, but I'm guessing they all had attempted suicide at some point in their lives. Remember that the devils tempted Alison with suicide, so my guess is that they did the same with the others, and that they were all more susceptible to the temptation because they had attempted suicide before. Becoming the sentinel was a way of saving her from eternal damnation, plus they got a new gaurd for the gateway, so its win win for them. Not so much for Alison, as the rest of her life will be spent there.

Um, no. I have no clue where you got that idea, but you couldn't be more wrong.

I just wanted to say I bought this a couple of months ago when I saw it a Frys along with Burnt Offerings, and I dig this film immensly. They don't make 'em like that anymore. I think there are a lot of things touched upon in the film that make the veiwer think, like the black and white cake / cat issue. I think that it probably represents good and evil as mentioned already. Oh, and I dug Burnt Offerings too, by the way and Burgiss Meredith is in both films! He does a great job in these older horror flicks.

And remember, majority of the "freaks" at the end was actual circus freaks, and they also used real people suffering from cancer and other bodily diseses, which caused some critics back then to view the film in disgust!

Well, in that case, I guess Ghostbusters is the longest running film series of all time.

The Sentinel just expired on Netflix streaming, I was able to catch it right before. I was struck by the violent stabbing scene, when she gouges his eye and cuts off his nose. Was this on the VHS version or does Netflix have an "uncut" version. Also seemed to be more Beverly D'Angelo nudity?

Bad movie. Lots of imagination, though. I can see how it influenced Fulci's Beyond and... if I read the ending right, there may be a little of this in Troma's Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo.

I caught a week before it expired. It was SD but looked good.

It's takes awhile to get going but I was fully engaged by the time the final act started. Terrific finale. Definitely need to revisit THE SENTINEL in a few years.

8 years later that still gave me a chuckle.
