Hey gang, I just wanted to give everyone a heads-up that SATURDAY FRIGHT SPECIAL (NH's first home-grown horror host TV show) and the Colonial Theatre in Keene, NH will present the fourth
Colonial Spooktacular on Saturday, July 31st at 2PM, featuring a 35mm screening of the 1967 Toho monsterpiece SON OF GODZILLA.

In addition to the feature, we'll be screening vintage 35mm monster movie previews, snack bar ads, a cartoon and more. Costumed characters from SFS will be on hand to introduce the film,
and prize giveaways will include an original Godzilla sketch from horror comics icon S.R. Bissette, who'll be debuting a new comic at the event which we'll be giving away signed copies of,
    among other cool items.

For me it's cool that we'll be screening a Godzilla film on the same day and time that I first got into Toho films via Boston's CREATURE DOUBLE FEATURE on TV, and the same day and time that many
70s Monster Kids got to see these films at kiddie matinees. What's doubly cool about this event is that it gives monster fans a chance to do something they never could back in '67, namely
SEE THIS ON THE BIG SCREEN, as the film was released directly to TV in the US.

Tickets for the event are $10.00 and will be available at the door. The Colonial Theatre is a beautiful 900-seat movie palace, so there's room for all.

If anyone from the board makes it to the show be sure to find me and say hello. I'll be the frazzled-looking guy in the lobby and at the prize table with glasses and the red SATURDAY FRIGHT SPECIAL t-shirt.

We try to give attendees as much bang for their buck as the law will allow, between the film elements, SFS characters, and prize giveaways.

Steve Bissette will also be holding a comic signing (along with present and former students from the Center for Cartoon Studies in VT) at Comic Boom in Keene that same day (don't know if it'll be before or after the screening), which is just up the street and around the corner from the theater. Should be an overall fun day for monster and horror fans who make it to town. Plus, the matinee showtime sees to it that you're less likely to fall asleep at the wheel and die in a flaming mass of twisted metal on your way home.

Unless you're into that kind of thing...

Oh, and probably my favorite moment from the last Godzilla film we ran (KING KONG VS. GODZILLA) --

First in line, about a half hour before we opened the doors, were a father (40?) and son (11?) who'd driven up from Attleboro, MA. The son was wearing a cool green baseball jacket with a white image of Godzilla emblazoned on the back. When I said to the father "nice jacket", he replied that it was his when HE was a kid.

    Godzilla BRINGS FAMILIES TOGETHER.

Brings a tear to the eye, that does....

I just found out that Keene will also be hosting its annual downtown classic car show the day of the Spooktacular, so anyone coming to see the big G should make sure to arrive early to drool over the shiny retro-mobiles lining both sides of Main Street
The classic car viewing usually starts early (around 9 or 10am), and is free for all. This is an event I look forward to every year, and am thrilled that it's something that Spooktacular attendees can also dig while they're waiting for monster-stompin' action!
