I think it IS a very underrated film.

Now, you can call me crazy. I know alot of people really dislike this film, but I watched it last night on DVD for the first time in a while, and I found it really compelling.

Say what you will about Joel Schumacher, but I think this is one of his better films. I don't think he watered down any of the ugly details of underground porn. It might be very much a Hollywood-movie, but not many Hollywood movies have the balls tackle such a sleazy subject.

Some people say it takes a prudish, conservative approach, but I really didn't get that feeling.

I admit that the second half of the movie has some major holes in it. There are definitely some flaws in the second half.....But at the very least the first act is really compelling, with Nicolas Cage investigating the snuff flick. Pretty fascinating stuff, if you ask me.....I also think Peter Stomare gives a great performance as the snuff- movie king....And, hey, you got Tony Soprano in there, too!!

I really don't think 8MM got a fair shake. I'm sure there will be people who will be quick to jump in and say "This movie sucks"....Hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion.....But I think if some people can agree that HALLOWEEN 3 is underrated, then why not this???:D :D :D :D

I think it was a very dark and disturbing film, and definitely deserving of a second watch. It is underrated!! Darker and more horrifier than a lot of other films, especially Hollywood produced ones!

I've always loved 8MM, and it is indeed very underrated! Its definitely one of the best films Nicolas Cage has done, and is a very dark and stellar film, at least in my eyes!

Didn't you feel after it was over how much better it could have been? I applaud the balls it took to get a film like this made in mainstream Hollywood with a big name star and director, but I think in order to do that the film had to hold back alot mor than it could or should have. I still enjoyed it for what it was, but what if...? I would recommend Thesis and Mute Witness, both very cool films on the subject.

I'd have to agree with Mr. Quist. I saw this in the theatres, was pretty excited to see it. I was dissapointed with my expectations, and I'm not a Nicholas Cage fan at all. Anyway picked it up at Wal-Mart for $9, figured it was worth a second look. Actually liked it better the second time around, still not a Nicholas Cage fan;) However it was nice to see Mr. Soprano in another much earlier role, and for nine bucks it's actually a nice DVD also, having a commentary track and some other cool stuff that memory is currently failing me

I think it was a pretty good film even tho I hated it. It was pretty sick and disturbing. It made me want to puke. But it was still pretty good.

It could have been SO much better. With Nicholas Cage and a script by Andrew Kevin Walker, 8mm could've been a great movie in the hands of a competent director. I was really bummed that David Fincher didn't direct it. I haven't seen Thesis yet, but have been thinking of getting it because I loved Alejandro Amenabar's The Others and Open Your Eyes. It's a shame that more talented low-budget directors haven't tackled the subject because it's something so dark and creepy that it's great for horror films.

As for whether snuff really exists or not, I think snuff films have been made, but for personal use and at staggering costs by and for people extremely mindful of the trouble they'd be in if they got caught with such material, which is why no one is sharing the stuff on Morpheus. Check out The North American Necrophilia and Snuff Message Board for a sampling of some of the real whackos out there.

8mm is definitely underrated. Quite shocking, disturbing and well acted. Not one of my favorite Nic Cage flicks (that'll be Leaving Las Vegas) but worth checking out.

Fuck that movie was boring, and I didn't care for any of the characters. And that fight at the end was embarassing - like the person who got the upper hand just proceeded to talk incessently. I was just sitting their looking at my watch going just kill the fucker and stop talking him to death - that's inhuman...;) It is the first movie I sat through continually checking my watch to see when it was finishing. I was waiting for something nasty. I saw it in the theatre. Maybe I'd see it differently if I could watch it in the comfort of my home with a couple of beers. Who knows. I don't really rent DVDs and I can't see myself buying it, and none of my friends have it.

I always liked 8mm, I could never understand why it took such a pounding when it came out, it has an interesting story which is laced with good characters who have a few layers to them.

  13. "Put down the crossbow!" Ha ha It's dumb as dirt, but perhaps the quintissential example of Schumacher camp (if you like that sort of thing)...

Sorry, however, I can't go along with anyone who calls this film "disturbing." Disturbing only if you think of it in the larger social context of demonizing alternative lifestyles by painting ridiculous images of a "seedy underground" as if it was revealing some deeply hidden truths... Or a filmmaker playing the game, regardless of what he has to say with his films in order to keep working in the studio system (though, I guess, Batman Returns was worth it, huh?).

And it doesn't exactly take balls to make a movie in Hollywood that condemns snuff films (which don't even exist) and casts goofy, exaggerated "underground types" (that also don't exist) as negative stereotypes... That's like a politician having the courage to take a stand against cancer. . Whoo! Thanks ever so much. ...God, that movie was a piece of horribly acted dreck. Now that I think about it, I take back what I said at the top. 8mm belongs wayyy in the back of the celluloid closet.

I think it was a piece of shit. I really wanted to like it, but the fact that Nic Cage is such a douchebag just killed the film for me. And all the horrible dialogue too. "Ohh, please, let me hurt them. Tell me I can hurt them." Lame.

Well, the opinions are as varied as I thought they would be:)

It's good to see this movie get SOME degree of respect, though.

I stand by what I said.....I think 8mm is a cool movie, and much more interesting than people give it credit for.

Sure, it could have been better. That's why I put it in the underrated file.... But, despite it's flaws, I still find it to be a fascinating flick.:D

It's been a few years since I saw it in the theaters but I recall thinking it was mediocre at best. I had high expectations for it what with Nic Cage leading, the scriptwriter from Seven penning it, Peter Stormare as a villain and me not disliking Schumaker that much (I quite like Lost Boys, Falling Down and I hear Tigerland is good though I admit he's made his fair amount of garbage). The visual style was derivative but nice, the first twenty minutes or so was pretty promising and disturbing but then it went downhill by taking the conventional narrative route and staying avoid from the controversiell layers of the film. So I wouldn't call it underrated but I will tell you this, reading this thread I've built up a hankering for giving it another chance.

If people fuck dead bodies and eat shit, I'm sure there are snuff films.

You should definitely watch it again and give it another chance.:)

I know in my case, it usually takes more than one viewing of a movie for me to feel the full impact of it.
