Anyone else agree that this type of film hasn't been perfected? House on Haunted Hill (remake) and Session 9 are good, but not great. Am I missing any stand outs?

"Stand outs"? I don't think so. CRAZY EIGHTS came immediately to mind, but it wasn't very good. Sorry, Traci.

Thanks. You see? James Wan needs to get on this.

Not necessarily "abandoned".......but I always thought Madhouse from 2004 starring Joshua Leonard of Blair Witch fame and Jordan Ladd, was underrated. I think it's pretty creepy at times. Some aspects of the mental institution were very unbelievable though, including the conditions of the some of the rooms/cells. But I dig that flick.

I'll check it out. Thanks Natas.

For sure. I got this dvd below.....not sure if there's a blu ray release of this but I feel it deserves one. Jordan Ladd's presence is worth the view alone.

That's a real tough one to answer. Stand outs? Besides the one's you mentioned the rest are not even close.

Here's a few of horror films that take place in "Abandoned mental institutions"

    Wrong Turn 4 (2011)
    The Dead Pit (1989)
    Doom Asylum (1987) (not abandon)
    Asylum (2008)
    Boo (2005)
    Dark Asylum (2001)
    DeadGirl (2008)
    Grave Encounters (2011)

There's Death Tunnel (which is terrible) and Doom Asylum (which is hilarious), both of which were filmed in a real abandoned asylum ala Session 9.

I'm probably in the minority, but I loved Wrong Turn 4 and Exeter.

It hasn't been perfected because usually the film being done there is as the location is already there and thus available on the cheap, causing the films to not be well thought out. That said, there's been some great examples done: The Devil's Chair is one that comes to mind.

Hell Asylum, and season 2 of American Horror Story.

maybe not "standouts" per se, but I enjoyed both.

I couldn't think of any abandoned asylum pictures outside of Session 9 myself, but a non-abandoned one I enjoy because of it's quirky and amateur nature is Don't Look In The Basement.

    Exeter (2015)
    Stonehearst Asylum
    (2014) (not abandoned)
    Silent Night, Bloody Night (1972)

I don't think there are any abandoned asylum / hospital movies that are necessarily better than Session 9, though.
