You can never get enough of shape shifting monsters in Antarctica. The first two films are among my top favorites and I also enjoyed the prequel.

They should go gender swap all the way this time and go the Black Christmas 2019 route :p

Well this is good news to me. I love Carpenter's film and I enjoy the prequel so I'm always up for more shape-shifting grossness.

This sounds great but I would have enjoyed the prequel much more had they stuck with the old school effects. Let's hope they get it right this time.

Yeah, there's a full on alien pilot they made for the end that got replaced with a CGI cylinder looking thing. How they haven't released a version with the original effects and alt ending boggles my mind.

I remember posting here and on the horror.com forum about me trying to like The Thing 2011. Probably mainly because of Mary Elizabeth Winstead. How she should have been in an original horror movie and not that remake. I still haven't seen her in Cloverfield yet. I know I posted these videos before which are a good breakdown of The Thing 2011. Part 2 is the real breakdown.

I just don't like the 2011 version enough to own it. If the Carpenter version didn't exist then yes the 2011 version is good. But the Carpenter version is just so much better. So why would you need a prequel / remake that really doesn't add if anything subtracts from the mystery of the Carpenter version? The answer for me is that I don't.

We'll see what this potential fuller version brings. I'm all for more snow horror movies. There are tons of different locations to pick. Perhaps it's time I made some kind of snow horror outline. I'm still sitting on my Ultimate Friday the 13th project. I should get moving on things.

Do you have images or the story saved with the alien pilot? What's the alternate ending?

Here some images of the unused Pilot alien from the end of the film. He was replaced with this:

I'll have to do some digging but there was a video on YouTube with one of the FX guys who spoke about this. Would be pretty awesome to see that original vision.

    Edit:

    I love vagina aliens! :D

I mean I feel like a lot of it came from Giger's inspiration for his art. I can't really think of any other aliens off the top of my head besides the Facehugger which I assume may have been the first "vagalien".
Also the ship openings in Alien:

Thanks. I've been searching around. It wasn't in wiki. I found a few videos, a bunch of pictures, and storyboards of part of the ending.

    https://monsterlegacy.net/2013/03/06/monster-gallery-the-thing-2011/

I do like that they did so much with the creation of the pilot. But overall that wouldn't have made the movie that much better or worse for that matter. It kind of reminds me of the stuff with the Alien / Prometheus pilot.

I didn't know the inspiration when I was too young and watching these movies. I think it first hit me when it was mentioned in one of the DVD commentaries about the facehugger prop. And I saw some of Giger's artwork in a book and was wondering what was going on. I think someone once called the Alien an equal opportunity rapist.

I know I had a Hellraiser dream with a bar when I originally watched all of those movies. But when I was looking up Giger stuff, I think that Alien / Predator collector on youtube did a tour of a Giger museum. I found out about an actual Giger bar.

    https://hrgiger.com/barmuseum.htm

There were more of them. I want to check them out one day.

I haven't read it yet but there is a character named Druuna which started in the Heavy Metal / Metal Hurlant magazines just like the Alien influence. There are some messed up looking mutated creatures from what I've seen in that comic / graphic novel. The artwork is beautiful with the girl but you know crazy stuff is going to happen with those tentacles coming out.

This old Japanese anime series was also probably influenced by those horror magazines and stories of the time.

Having actually clicked on the link in the OP and read article, I'm interested in the newly-discovered long version of the original novel. This might be worth checking out--unless the cut pages were cut because they were boring.

I'd forgotten about the original extended draft getting released. There's was a Kickstarter but I didn't contribute. Probably should have. I'll have to look around now for today's offerings.

But even if parts of the book were cut for good reason sometimes there's a germ of an idea that can grow in other fertile grounds.

I'm hoping this will be the case. I'm sure it's the cynic in me, but I do believe that the excised pages will at least have better ideas than modern Hollywood/Blumhouse could create.
