Ah, yes, I also noticed that trend with trailers. Check out Buio Omega, Fulci's Black Cat and Zombie 2 trailers (they came first to my mind). They also contain some alternate or extra takes of the same scenes we know from the films! And I must say I like it!
I also love Anthropophagus, its another D'Amato classic. The cinematography is superb as usual in all his films. I really loved the catacomb scenes, very atmospheric. Also a great cast, Tisa Farrow, George Eastman and Zora Kerova. Whilst D'Amato is no Argento, he's certainly not the hack his critics portray him as. He left behind a wonderful legacy of cinema. Just check out the brilliant torture porn epic Emanuelle in America, which makes Hostel look tame in comparison. Also the superb Beyond The Darkness and Emanuelle and The Last Cannibals.
Planning a double-feature this weekend, with both Anthropophagus + Absurd. I'm inviting another buddy over to watch with me, and both of these will be first-time viewings. Recommended, or will it be too much of a bad-good thing?
Anthro is quite decent, i rewatched it recently, more spooky than gory horror Absurd starts off strong but (as far as i recall) the best gore effect is in the first 30 minutes and then it loses steam gradually pick Anthro and another film!
I always enjoyed the building sense of dread in Anthropophagus, whereas Absurd tends to lose me along the way. The quality of the gore varies in both. Anthro has that rather fake head in the bucket, where Absurd cuts to something that doesn't really look like anything on two occasions to show close-ups of head trauma. If the gore is the main pull of Absurd, then it isn't consistently good enough, while Anthro at least has other qualities besides the gore. I'd maybe pair Anthro with Buio Omega or the terrible but wildly different Porno Holocaust. It just occurred to me that Code Red has plans to release D'Amato's Erotic Nights of the Living Dead. Any thoughts on that? I haven't seen it.
Uncomfortable to watch because it is bad, slow and the plot/cast/acting/porn is terrible. I mean slow, awkwardly staged sex scenes. It's pretty boring. It's also a must-own.
Pretty nice guy. Pleasant to talk to, smells of mtn dew and beef jerky and I heard he's hung like a moose.
I've had this on DVD for some time and never got around to watching it. This Italian photobusta gives you an idea of what to expect. NSFW warning. Cheesy make up and gore. With that being said I will definitely be buying.
It is though better than Porno Holocaust which is a complete yawn fest with ugly sex and one lone zombie. The climax with the zombies in "Erotic Nights" is actually pretty atmospheric and let's not forget Laura Gemser is in this one too which is never a bad thing.
100% correct. I saw P. Holocaust first and braced myself for some over the top adult zombie action and got some sleep, but beautiful island photography instead. There is a little atmosphere at some points in E. Night of the L.D.
Yeah, of the two I'd re-watch Erotic Nights of the Living Dead over Porno Holocaust any day. They both suck but Erotic Nights is at least somewhat entertaining, warts and all. But back to the original question by Workshed, if you've never seen them before definitely check both Anthro and Absurd out (and the double-feature idea I think works, seeing as they are both related somewhat)! Just be warned that they are both slower paced, but each has its unique charms.
For a moment I thought you were talking about Porno Holocaust. That one has the momentum of a beached whale.
