Saw the cut version of this film and thought it was great, probably one of D'Amato's best, Shriek Show really needs to release this, as I don't see MGM making a huge effort to release this uncut. The fact that Emmanuelle and the Last Cannibals has already been released but Anthropophagus hasn't has got me stumped. BTW: The cut dvd I saw entitled Grim Reaper had no menus and had just about the worst audio and video I have witnessed on a DVD.

  2. I have this one on VHS ( Greek Subtitles ) and in Uncut and also Absurd ( Anthropophagus 2 ) also uncut both in widescreen , but just wish they could release these two classics to DVD . I know they have the Anthropophagus DVD here - http://www.revok.com/searchall.php?search=dvd&type=fulltex
    - it is bootleg and it is uncut , so i might get it here it they don't hurry up with an uncut US release date .

That is the problem with all Releases worldwide.

The film was shot on a very cheap Kodak 16mm Film.
even for the 80ies a bad standard.
    think:
"Antropophagus" was D`Amato`s first Movie for his own Company "Filmirage".
And also, as he mentioned many times "the cheapest Production he has ever made" even in technical Standard.

And also the original Filmnegative for the Film is lost. (due my 5 year research i heard the negative is destroyed, so is the Original Mastertape of Marcello Giombini creepy Score)

The best Version of the Movie you will find, is a remasterd Beta Copy from the original Negative. And also the Beta Copy was a long time in the Vaults of any cellar in Italy :( )
So, Davide Pullici of Nocturno Cinema Italia has found this Copy in 1998 and had to remaster it.
This Version of this "20th anniversary Remasterd Version" was Print for the VHS ReRelease of the Movie for Nocturno Cinema (and this only for commercial intentions and for Festival purposes) in Italy in 1999.
And the same Master was used for the Best DVD Release of this movie, released in Japan this year. (but also far away drom the DVD Standard:( )

    greetings from Germany

I was very disappointed in the "Grim Reaper" version of this film - it was just plain dull - so I highly doubt a couple more gore scene will make me change my mind. Even if a company did end up releasing this, I probably wouldn't buy it. An overrated film, IMO. :(

Don`t expect to much, there are only three "major" Gorescenes in this Film.
An overrated Film indeed, if you expect bloodshed like many other italian horrormovies (e.g. Fulci), you are wrong with "Antropophagus" ;)

Marc Morris is easy to find - he's the board admin in the forums over at Anchor Bay UK.

If I didn't buy video nasties just becaise they stink I'd be in a sorry state indeed. I'd buy Anthropophagus in a heartbeat. Sounds like fun, and it's a missing part of the nasty pie.

Indeed... Like a lot of Italian films, this has terrible pacing (I've only seen the uncut version), so I'm not exactly in a hurry to see this one for a while... I'll stick with Buio Omega

That being said, there is a dirty, griity, grim feel about it. If it wasn't for the completely nihilistic tone, I'd write it off altogether.

Sure, three gore scenes, but they really extend far beyond the level of excess you see in virtually any other horror movie you can possibly name...

It's just too bad the pacing is so damn horrible. It kind of fits the tone of the film, but if it were tightened a bit it would fall off of my borderline worst horror films ever made.

anthropophagous is a guilty pleasure of mine , but i agree w/ u guys about the pacing....this film does drag, the second one absurd is much better paced ,but cheaply made, and over the top gore.....i currently own
the u.k. precert under the title anthropophagous the beast , which is complete , but we need a definitive DVD release uncut......

I finally gave in and got one of the foreign discs of this filim. Man do I love this movie. I think I got the same version that FZF talked about a page or two back.. like he said, in the dark scenes it's almost impossible to tell what's going on (during the rain storm? forget about it!) and there are foriegn subs in a couple parts too.

I didn't have a problem with the pacing at all, the music is absolutly fantastic and it's great to see more Zora Kerova. It's basically just the gore that leaves a little to be desired, in my opinion. The fetus eating pays off, though.

Anthropophagus 2000 makes a great companion to this, if you can still find it around on DVD.

Anthro R1 is now available for pre-order on Amazon for $13.97. Street date is 10/25 and it looks like we may be getting a 2-disc set!

Now hopefully the transfer won't be sourced from videotape.

I've been wanting to see this one for some time now. I can't wait to get this one although it will most likely end up being an internet order.

I just hope this edition will kick ass like their special edition of Fulci's Zombie because this little film needs a special edition.

I admit, it is a guilty pleasure, but it's a lot of fun once you get into it; and by the final 30 minutes it really kicks into overdrive and is very rewarding for the slow pacing earlier in the picture.

Heh, somehow I'm reminded of that advertisement of Video Watchdog that had a still of the blind girl stabbing at the air with her incredibly hairy armpits with the caption (something to the effect of) "Don't get caught in a hairy situation!" :D

I forgot I have this on vhs in uncut form with Greek subtitles. I also have Absurd which I didn't care for very much. I love Antropophagus and I will definately get the dvd when it comes out, I just hope the video looks good.

Although I've never had the pleasure of seeing Anthropophagous I did see the trailer for it on the Just Before Dawn disk, and Oh Boy I can't wait for this one. It looks more low budget and cheesy than I had imagined -- but just looks like a lot of old school style fun . Remember this was based only on a trailer so if I'm off base, just going with the vibe I got from it.

I would love to see them get Rosso Sangue on DVD too. I never got around to seeing that.

"Anthropophagous" and "Absurd" were directed, written and played by a porn "director" and a porn "actor" - there is not much one could expect from such productions.
