    I'd steer clear....WAY clear

The Pioneer sounds like an industrial player. They're sturdy, but not at all meant for home use. You probably wouldn't be able to play the digital tracks on discs with that thing, which means on discs with commentary, you can't turn the commentary off!

And the guy is BSing you if he's telling you the Mag will play DVDs. If it has a 5 inch tray, it's for CDs, not DVDs

Both players are one-sided, which is a real pain as well.

    Look for Pioneer CLD-D502,504,505, or CLD-D406, or CLD-D606, or CLD-D701, 702, 702, or 704

I bought a Proscan player from Ebay for around $100, and that was a 2-sided player with AC-3 outs. In other words it kicks the ass of the players the guy is trying to sell you

Paff is right - stay clear. Only two players can play both laserdisc and dvd - Pioneer DVL-919 and DVL-909. The models Paff suggested are very affordable on Ebay.

Also, there are a few "off-brands" that are supposedly clones of upper-level Pioneers. These can slip through the cracks and you might get one cheap.

I've heard the Mitsubishi 7057 is a clone of the Pioneer CLD-D704.

And the Marantz LV-520 is the equivalent of the Pioneer Elite CLD-59

I got a Pro-Scan PS-LD46 from E-bay for around $100, and it's DEFINITELY a Pioneer, and performed just as well as a mid level Pioneer. It's my backup player.

If you find any auctions or sales, post 'em here, and I'll check 'em out and give you my opinions. Laserdisc is a fun little addition to a good home theater.
