Overall this is good news but while it looks like this came from an excellent master Arrow has unfortunately bit-starved what has easily been their best two transfers to date: http://wtf-film.com/site/2012/05/06/a-demonic-lamberto-bava-double-feature/ Something Weird Video has been guilty of the same thing, turning the bit rate down real low and leaving a half empty 25GB disc. So it's not even a cost cutting measure because the bit rate being that low doesn't save them any money. Baby steps I suppose. Baby steps. I'm probably going to buy these as it seems unlikely Demons will reach our shores any times soon. Although I said the same thing about Battle Royale.
Same here - since ROTLD got delayed I cancelled my previous order and then combined it with the Demons steelbook
I've only watched Demons so far, pic quality is OK but the sound is disappointing being only mono. The old Japanese laserdisc I had was in Dolby Stereo and was much better audio wise. I don't have the Jap LD anymore but I wonder if it would be possible to rip the PCM audio from the LD and create a better Blu-ray version. <edit> Oh, from one of the review links above:
Interestingly enough, the audio for D1 is stereo if you pick the Italian track and use the English subtitles. But I was surprised to find the Italian dialog does NOT sync with the video any better than the English track does. Both tracks were apparently overdubbed after the fact.
I think a lot of these Italian movies are dubbed over as the actors speak many diffident languages. American actors will speak English while other actors may reply in Italian or another language. Then it's just dubbed over. I think it was talked about on the Suspiria dvd.
Hey guys is anyone having problems playing their Demons 1 and 2 Blu rays? I have a Region Free Sherwood 5004 - all my other Arrow BDs and imports play fine - but these won't work. Any suggestions? Thanks!!
I've read that there's a UK and american english dubbing for Demons. Do you know if the english track in the UK BR is the funny one? Or the american dubbing is the funniest? Thanks. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Demons-Steelbook-Limited-Edition-Blu-ray/dp/B007H9OORW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378170555&sr=8-1&keywords=demons+blu-ray
Hey, I have watched both in my Seiki with no problems despite having problems playing my blu's of Starship Troopers and Midnight Legacy's Alien 2. Sorry you are having bad luck with them.
I prefer the USA 1986 Ascot Released theatrical version (also on New World VHS and Image Laserdisc). I love the extra music "stings" and dialogue. I never liked the dubbing of the punks, ect in the Japan LD, Roan LD, Anchor Bay VHS, DVD, ect. I also loved the USA 1986 trailer that I hope is included on the newest Synapse release. Example: I hated: "...it's the coke in your ears..." Preferred: "...it's count Draculaaaa..."
Arrow are releasing Demons 1 and 2, with new 4K transfers, in Dolby Vision!! https://arrowfilms.com/product-detail/demons-1---2-limited-edition-uhd/FCD2090 There is also a Blu-Ray edition, with the new transfers. https://arrowfilms.com/product-detail/demons-1---2-limited-edition-blu-ray/FCD2035
Amazon.co.uk is not allowing US sales again, and it looks like Diabolik has a gentleman's agreement with Synapse not to carry it, so this is shaping up to be another release that'll be difficult to get a hold of. Amazon.co.uk: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08P3JTSLW/?tag=horrdigi-20&linkCode=ur1 While Amazon.co.uk is still on the expensive side Zavvi is only discounted 25% so Amazon's price will certainly be coming down by the usual 30%. Plus Amazon will probably crack in a few months the way they did with Dawn and ship it to the US. Looking over the packaging I'm not all the enthused and may just pass on it. My gut instinct was to shoot from the hip the same way I did for Dawn but I don't find these accoutrements to be worth the hassle or expense. UK can keep it.
Thanks for this post. I just preordered this, Beyond Re-animator and REC from Zavvi. They came through with the Dawn of the Dead sets for me, so this was an easy decision.
I wonder just how limited this will be - Id love to have these in 4k with dolby vision - but who knows if Arrow nailed the transfers or not. Decisions.......
That is always a potential problem and as long as you don't need the limited edition you can wait. If you want the limited edition sometimes you have to take the chance on a pre-order or risk it not being available (except at increased pricing on Ebay). Arrow is a solid company so I don't have as much concern about a lesser transfer.
I did see someone post on Blu-ray.com that they recently bought a Shout Factory UHD and it showed an "Incorrect Regions" page when they tried to play it. People speculated that the studio was able to this with BDJava (or something like that) but I don't know for sure.
Wtf?! UHD don’t have region codes. So if Shout are using some trickery, to lock their UHD’s, then it’s really shitty of them.
