OK: The Ultimate Urotsukidoji DVD Guide!!!

Here is everything anyone will ever need to know, all in one place!

Urotsukidoji is a direct-to-video (or "OVA") serial. There are four "arcs", each consisting of several parts.

Arc 1: Legend of the Overfiend is 3 episodes.

Arc 2: Legend of the Demon Womb is 2 episodes.

These 5 episodes are available IN FULL on the Urotsukidoji: Perfect Collection dvd. There are subtitled into English.

A movie was made by cutting down each arc.

Movie 1: Legend of the Overfiend is a DRASTICALLY CUT version of Arc 1. It is rated NC-17 by the MPAA(!). It is also out on dvd.

Movie 2: Legend of the Demon Womb is a cut, though less drastically cut, version of Arc 2. It also contains a scene shot just for the movie, involving a Nazi dominatrix teacher. This is the only scene NOT in the Perfect Collection dvd. This movie is also out on dvd.

    Both movies are dubbed ONLY.

Arc 3: Return of the Overfiend is 4 episodes. It is out on dvd in full, but dubbed only.

Arc 4: Inferno Road is 2 episodes and a conclusion movie. This movie is often mistaken for a third episode, and it is, but it was a theatrically released film as well. Both episodes and the movie are on one dvd. Again, dubbed only.

There were also cut down movie versions of Arcs 3 and 4, but they are VHS only.

There is a Urotsukidoji box set dvd as well. It, however, contains the CUT movie versions of Arcs 1 and 2, along with the complete Arcs 3 and 4. Why? Who the hell knows?!

A new Urotskidoji series is in the works... it'll hit the US fairly soon!

PS: oddly enough, Wicked City, Ninja Scroll, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust are all by the same director. Urotsukidoji is by a different team. Look for the all though!

And Cowboy Bebop does NOT suck!

Great news, Jog!:) As soon as you hear anything, please post the details here.

Thanks also for the definitive guide to the Urotsukidoji saga! Shame the Perfect Collection is missing one scene but I must admit, it does sound very controversial!

really I have never seen a dvd of the 4 eps. I have seen the movie, which I have on VHS and one of the ep. It seem like a totally different thing.

Example, in the ep, I remember the guy with metal cock with the spikes, he's not even in the movie.

What can you all tell me about the DVDs of Jin-Roh and Metropolis? Are they any good? I've seen both at Walmart but hesitated to pick 'em up? What's the story on these DVDs? ;)

I snagged Metropolis at Wal-Mart, I haven't watched it yet but It sounds pretty cool. I bought Jin-Roh also because I heard so much great stuff about it. I would say it's a pretty good movie to watch but not much action at all and mostly talking so don't expect an action or horror type movie. I heard it was the goriest animated movie ever, It's definetly not though. Near the end I missed part of the story and I didn't know what was going on. I might have liked it a lot more if I hadn't of missed anything. If it's $20-$25 I would say get it if your interested in animation. It would be worth the risk. I paid $35 for the deluxe edition and I didn't regret it even though it wasn't the greatest movie.

    Jin-Roh and Metropolis:

Both are good films that I enjoyed. But neither are horror films, though I guess that Jin-Roh has some horror elements. Atmims, whoever told you that Jin-Roh was the goriest anime ever was either not in his or her right mind, or simply has not watched a lot of anime. If you want gore, go see Ninja Scroll or Fist of the North Star. And you can't miss a second of Jin-Roh, or you'll be lost! :)

Jin-Roh is a quiet, deeply realist film about terrorism and man's beastly nature in an alternate-reality mid-20th century. There are some horrific moments, but it is a meditative film. Very good though. The standard dvd is almost bare-bones. The special edition has lovely packaging, the entire (wonderful) score on cd, and a bonus dvd with about an hour's worth of interviews plus sketches and trailers. But... it's around $50 ($35 was a nice price...). Maybe you should rent it first...

Metropolis, on the other hand, is big, loud, colorful fun, a celebration of anime and its history, with all the classic cliches rolled out and executed perfectly, with some very old-school stylings. It's like a summer blockbuster, only fairly intellegent and very stylish. I liked it a lot, but I think you need to really enjoy anime to get the most out of it. The dvd has a mini-disc enclosed with interviews and other fun. Wal-Mart had it for $14.95 the first week, but I bet it has gone up...

Heh. If it makes you feel any better, I've never seen ANY of these dvds in a store... it was all online for me. :) And while I'm not an expert on the later Urotsukidoji movies, I do know that they were changed around quite a bit from the original sources, with a good number of new scenes animated for the movies... so yeah, they might actually BE totally different things...

Heh heh, I agree. I was excited because I already saw Fist of the North Star and I was expecting some ultra gory animation. I was watching the movie at first expecting a gory, horror type movie after I realised it wasn't that type of movie I began to like it anyways.

ok, for everyone who is reading this, let's clear this up once and for all for those of you who are thinking of getting these movies:

There are 4 parts that make up the 3rd chapter, each tape runs 45 mins long, for a total of 180 mins.

The movie is 120 minutes long.

so we are missing a full hour of stuff, that is a lot don't you think? and since there are new added scenes like you said, it's really OVER an hour worth of film that is missing.

If the 3rd chapter you are talking about is "Urotsukidoji III Return of the Overfiend" I have a version on DVD that is 210 minutes long.

    That would be the one,

I hate all these different versions.

Can you please post a pic of the cover, so that I will know how it looks like.

Also how much more was it than the movie version and is it uncensored ( aka not burred, the version I saw on tape was burred, but the movie version I have is not)

Have you seen the movie version? I can also swear that the animation looked different, but I can't confirm this, can you?

Also, Jog where on-line did you see them, I can find everthing expect these uncut versions at stores (brickhouse), I even found the perfect collection DVD, yet not these. :(

This is the exact DVD I believe that is included in the DVD box set. It has the same running time and the same cover minus the warning sticker.

I actually haven't watched Urotsukidoji III yet. I started to watch Urotsukidoji III after watching I and II but the animation was poor, especially compared to the first 2 so I didn't bother with it at the time (that was about a half a year ago and I still haven't watched it). Then I found out that I had the cut version of I & II so I decided to get the Urotsukidoji Perfect collection before I watched Urotsukidoji III.

It sucks that they are so many versions of Urotsukidoji. Why the hell would they put the cut versions of Urotsukidoji I and II in the box set when I believe Urotsukidoji Perfect Collection was already out at the time it was released?

I don't know about the blurring... it's likely still there (even in the Perfect Collection there are instances)... usually the unblurred masters were not kept around for earlier adult anime (today it is different). And since the movie for 3 was probably released theatrically, I sus pect that the new scenes will look different and likely better than the original scenes (the same thing was done with the movie version of "Macross Plus", which rearranges plot details from the original series along with adding stuff) As an added slap, keep in mind the the Urotsukidoji 3 dvd, while uncut, is DUBBED ONLY... well, no, actually the Japanese track is included, there's just no subtitles. Same goes for 4... so actually there is no way to see Urotsukidoji 3 and 4 subtitled (all the vhs was dubbed too). If you're still in the mood...

    http://store.yahoo.com/animenation/a18d-2035.html

As for why the cut versions of 1 and 2 were included in the box with the uncut 3 and 4... as I stated before... who the hell knows? I suspect that it's the same reason why 3 and 4 aren't subtitled: because the dvds come from a time when adult release studios felt that adult anime fans didn't care about quality. Things have changed, but no re-released are planned...

I am guessing that their logic was that they didn't want to screw fans that brought the perfect collection by making them buy it again in the box set, in order to get the other two.

but maybe I am giving them too much credit?

How is the Demon Beast Invasion series? Is it even close to Urotsukidoji's goodness?
    Thanks!

I'm looking into getting this series too. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this one also has a 'perfect collection' only..it -is- perfect, because it has the -entire- series on it, unlike the Urot. perfect collection which does not. It is also from Toshio Maeda, same creator as Urot. and looks like it runs along the same lines too.
Another suggestion is Nightmare Campus. Its also by Toshio, and is very similar to Urot. The dvd also contains the entire series....even tho the ending seems unfinished.

Re: Re: Re: Re: WOOO WEEEE!!!

D'oh! I'm way late in coming to this thread, but I definitely plan on doing some anime reviews here, at least Perfect Blue. As soon as I get a lull in my reviewing schedule, I'll write one up.

Cowboy Bebop is a fantastic series, probably my all time favorite. They run it on Cartoon Network sometime on Saturday nights, check the listings. It's dubbed, but Bebop is one of the better dubs out there.

While nowhere near as disturbing as Urotsukidoji, I kinda like Blue Seed, which features a different "monster of the week". Some are pretty cool. I just got the Perfect Collection, all 26 episodes, for $38. That's highway robbery for anime.

One show I find REAL disturbing is Hand Maid May. It's about a guy who accidently acquires a 12" robot cyber-doll. What makes it so damn weird is that the whole show seems aimed for children (everything, especially May, is relentlessly cute and perky). However, there is major T&A. Panty shots, bra shots, you name it. I'm still at a loss who this show is meant for....little kids or perverted adults.

Another great series to check out is Serial Experiments: Lain. This is a real mind-f**k of a series that does not get any clearer by the end. I also have the first disc of Boogiepop Phantom, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

Has anyone seen Darkside Blues? My local video store has it, I'm thinking of checking it out.

And not even remotely horror or hentai related, but I just love wacky space adventures like The Irresponsible Captain Tylor and Martian Successor Nadesico. They used to show Tylor on the International Channel. Right now, they're running Slayers, a show that's starting to grow on me. Plus, I can't get over the fact that the helium-voiced Lina Inverse is done by the same actress (Megumi Hayashiabara) who played the sultry Faye Valentine in Cowboy Bebop.

Anime - like crack cocaine, except it's not as cheap.

    Paff,

This site should review ALL the Urotsukidoji DVDs, that would kick so much ass!
I think that maybe people get confuse with this series due to it having so many hardcore sex scenes, but it's not really true anime porn like most people who never see it or only see it and never seen true anime porn think.
