    There's Iconic. There's Legendary. Then there's Basil S. Gogos.

The brilliant artist passed away Wednesday, September 13sth, at the age of 88.

First appearance of Gogos's work on Famous Monsters of Filmland No. 9, November 1960.

-- "Basil's work has been a part of my life, my being, for even longer. His beautiful paintings that graced the cover of my favorite magazine, Famous Monsters, influenced me and every other monster kid who saw them. Our favorite monsters who we, up until that time, only knew in black and white were now in glorious color, and what color! I am sad that there will never be any new Basis Gogos painting to thrill me but, I am happy that this man produced so much beautiful work in his life that will still give me pleasure every time I look at them.'' -- Rick Baker

Not much for tributes yet, but here's the portion of Elvira's 'Monsterama' about Basil Gogos with some great highlights:

Very sad news, as I only recently learned he popped up at a local flea market on occasion but I never got to meet him. This has been a long time favorite image of mine:

An immense talent, and rightly celebrated as a legend in the genre. His amazing illustrations were horrific and breathtaking in equal measure.
