    You're describing the situation as though he had nothing to do with the problem. But, the whole movie is about the couple having a problem. How did you come to the conclusion that he needs to solve the problem even though he nor the audience have any idea how he started it?

    That's not what I said. I said his character has this "I need to solve this" approach. That's not me saying he has to, but that the character as written seems to want to solve it. Very male approach to relationships, often.

    And...then aliens land or whatever and a black-eyed doppelganger of him and her are running around. How did his male approach start/lead to that whole nonsense?

    I'm getting confused. Are you asking me to explain the plot/subtext? A google search for a critical assessment by a critic would probably me more productive than me explaining what I, personally, take away from it.
