Arrow saves the day again! This is one I will definitely import as this still hasn't made it to the states in the ten years it's been out.

Think I'll just bump this thread for this blurb:
    http://www.fangoria.com/index.php?o...-battle-royale&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=167

After 12 years it's somewhat amazing to me that it took something like Hunger Games to finally get one of the most infamous blockbusters to come out of Japan to America. I'm not counting on Anchor Bay to really wow us with a transfer here, as apparently even Japan has been re-using the same tired master the handed Arrow.

If it plays Chicago in 3D I may check it out. If reviews show the Blu-ray to be a new master I may bite on that but I'm doubtful since they only mention a 7.1 upgrade.

I have the Arrow limited edition and the only thing I can see being improved in the audio and video. No way this will beat Arrow's release in the extra and presentation department.

Well let's see; Teaming up with Fox again, gaining the rights for Mother's Day remake, and Halloween 4 and 5 Blu-rays in the works.

So, my "once again" still stands. :p

I'll always be grateful to Anchor Bay for championing underground horror in the early days of DVD and it looks like they're still somewhat trying, but the early days of underground horror on blu-ray definitely belong to Blue Underground and Synapse. Anchor Bay, in my opinion, no longer holds a fraction of the importance that they once had in home video horror/exploitation.

Like a battered wife, it's sometimes surprising the way people still come back to eat out Anchor Bay's asshole and tell us how good it is.

One black eye was enough for me, I'm not going to stick around to see if I'll get a second. If some good comes out of Anchor Bay, fine I'll take it, but I'm not going to pretend that thing couldn't be better.

Anchor Bay has been sitting on Battle Royale for several years now and thanks to Hunger Games probably just woke up about it. Now they're "considering their options." It's too little too late in my book. I have the Arrow limited edition release and Toei isn't likely to cough up a better transfer for Anchor Bay.

BTW Arrow has a stand alone release that remains in print.

Weren't there rumors they were also working on an Ultimate Dawn Blu Ray set with all four cuts of the film, as well as Demons and Demons 2. If they could release all of those titles, although very unlikely, they cold be back in the game!

I wouldn't mind an ultimate Halloween Blu Ray set either with the TV cut as well as all the extras missing from the earlier DVDs. Throw in that deleted footage that was found and could easily be the release of the year!

I could be wrong but I think the stand alone release is unfortunately region locked.

No, your right. Arrow's Battle Royale limited edition is region free whereas their subsequent standard blu-ray release is region B locked. Apparently the license holders only agreed to a region free release if it was a limited issue.

Comparison of the Arrow Blu to the Toei 3D Blu: http://www.kentaiblog.com/2011/12/fight-3d-future.html

The new transfer is clearly blown out and candy colored. But it does show that there was plenty of detail and grain originally there. I feared the original DI was all we really had to work with. Not sure how much, if any, control Anchor Bay has over the transfers they'll be using. Hopefully Anchor Bay can get the original unmolested telecine Toei created in order to do the 3D version and use that for the 2D version. I doubt Anchor Bay would re-do the 3D version either way; far too much cost there.

Yep, I overlooked that fact. Apparently though the LE Blu-ray is still available from Arrow direct: http://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/index.php?c=y&art_id=44&tle_id=476&v=

I seem to recall it was really cheap on Amazon.co.uk though.

Yes, Arrow's website is still selling the limited edition blu-ray set for £39.99. I just ordered mine not too long ago and suprisingly I got #27/10,000
