I've been expanding my library lately.. I found a really good book on Universals horror movies but would like to pick one up on Hammer. Any suggestions? There only seems to be 1 in print right now that sounds pretty good. What I would like is something which basically covers everything they've done from start to finish and especially have information on all of their movies with pictures, etc. Thanks. :)

  2. I only have one bood dedicated to covering just the Hammer films, but I think it's a pretty good one, has photos, background info and ideas for films never made. The title is, House of Horror.

The only book I have is Hammer, House of Horror, by Howard Maxford, published by the Overlook Press. It's very informative, showing in chronological order not only the movies but the business that was going on within the studio. A great book, yet I wish I could lay my hands on the oh so few others out there. :(

Thanks for the help. This one seems to be the only one in print right now and was the one I was looking out. Cool

Hammer House of Horror is Ok but the ultimate Hammer book is The Hammer Story by Marcus Hearn & Allen Barnes. This is a beautiful oversized volume printed on glossy paper that covers every film that Hammer has done, with beautiful color stills and poster repos on every page. Hammer Films: A Complete Filmogrophy from McFarland publishers is also excellent, with detailed info and credits for all the films, but is nowhere as beautiful a book as the The Hammer Story.

Is the Hammer Story a Trade Paperpack? I think that's the one I've been wanting for so long.

  7. I've heard nothing but good concerning, The Hammer Story, I do see that it can be ordered through the Amazon UK site, so maybe that's what we all should look into! :D

My copy of The Hammer Story is a hardback, but I got mine from a special offer from Dick Klemson over at Little Shoppe Of Horrors zine (the best Hammer zine EVER) and it was shipped directly from the publisher in England. They may have released a paperback version since then. Trust me on this, this is THE book for Hammer fans. Absoulutely georgeous! You will treasure this volume if you're a Hammer fan.

  10. I believe that's the one, CK! At least, it's the book I've been looking into. Being that there are so few books available on Hammer, I want to add any/all that I can lay my hands onto.

I wouldn't call it the best Hammer book available but Bruce Lanier Wright's NIGHTWALKERS: Gothic Horror Movies, The Modern Era has some fun things to say about quite a few Hammer films.

jae, this book is sweet! :) Good call, that is a publicity shot from Twins of Evil, the pic info just says it features Katya Wyeth, the Collinsons, Maggie Wright and Luan Peters, but there are 2 pages in the book devoted to Twins.

I did have to scan a few pics, I also can't get enough of the classic posters, any requests? ...yes, I do have too much free time today. :D

OH MAN! I just got the book today and all I can say is its AMAZING! Tons of great pictures, behind the scenes stuff, posters. Its great finally getting a look at alot of the movies I've only just heard about. I wasn't expecting much text being only about 200 pages and filled with pictures but its actually got quite a bit in there. I see me dropping alot of money on tapes soon. :)

If you're interested in this book I say get it! Who knows if it will be available much longer.

Well, now that makes four books I need...
    The Hammer Story
Do You Want it Good, or Tuesday? by Jimmy Sangster
James Bernard - Composer to Count Dracula (coming summer)
So You Want To Be In Pictures? By Val Guest (end of April)
looks like a lot of good reading :D

  20. MH, I'd definitely like to add the last three on your list to my collection, too! :D I see at the Hammer website that they are also adding more Hammer CDs to their library of music and it looks like, The Lost Continent has a CD of it's own coming out! Yipee! :D
