aeon.Nemesis and co., Glad to see so much enthusiasm for the JC and Kurt Russell commentaries. I second that...they are a terrific listen! Actually, if you like commentaries with Kurt, you may also consider the SE DVD of the raunchy 1980 Zemeckis comedy USED CARS. Though obviously not horror, the commentary with Zemeckis, Russell, and Bob Gale is hilarious. Kurt in particular delivers the goods with endless humorous anecdotes, etc. Good stuff!
Lots of great ones here, one of the funniest to me is Hooper and the gang on the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Fun and highly informative. "There, look! I fell while running with the chainsaw!" I tend to enjoy Matthew Bright's commentaries (except for his wheezing) on Ted Bundy and Freeway. Joe Dante and the gang are pretty entertaining at times on their commentaries for Gremlins and The Howling. Vampyres has a pretty great commentary with Jose Larraz and his producer Brian Aston. The director's accent and attitude is just hysterical and he has some great one-liners. (I own the original AB disc, but I believe that the BU version is the same). It's a terrific film, IMO. I like when film buffs/experts or analysists discuss horror and not just the directors. This is why I really enjoy hearing Camille Paglia discuss Basic Instinct, Roger Avary on Day of the Dead, and Joe Bob Briggs on I Spit on Your Grave. Wes Craven is pretty good on commentaries, too. Particularly on The Last House on the Left.
I have to admit I love all 5 commentaries on "Cabin Fever." As much as I like the movie already, the commentaries are consistently enetertaining and interesting (especially the "director only" commentary) even though some information is repeated in a few of them.
i love kurt russel commentaries. the rod piper one on they live is also good but i think my favorite one is the bill paxton commentary on frailty. unless you are absolutely looking for funny improv in your commentaries, the commentary on frailty is very informative as far as scene to scene info goes and he also managed to squeeze in some name specific ass kissing as far as crew and production. but i really like bill paxton so i'm a little biased.(any paxton quote from aliens is gold) i had high expectations for the commentary track on meet the parents because it has robert deniro but alas it was the worst commentary ever with ben stiller trying his best even asking questions at times to try and prime deniro for a reply only to get this from deniro: "eh" terrible!
I really liked the Eli Roth Cabin Fever commentary also. I'd agree with the JC and Kurt Russell commentaries. The Joe Bob Briggs comm. is great on one of my fave films, I Spit on Your Grave. I'm surprised no one mentioned Donnie Darko. It's not really horror, but the comm. with Jake and Richard is good. Especially when Jake does his Walken impersonation. It's been a while, but I remember liking the commentary by Roger Ebert on Dark City also.
Evil Dead 2 [Campbell, Raimi, Nicotero, Spiegel] Texas Chainsaw Massacre[Hansen, Hooper, Pearl] Gunnar Hansen: "Oh, I guess that really was somebodys dick." Day of the Dead[Romero, Savini, Cardillie, Anderson] Blade II[Snipes, Goyer] Snipes: What the fuck!? The bitch crumbled up in my hands!! Underworld [Wiseman, McBride, Grevidux] Bubba Ho-Tep["The King"]"Elvis":"What is he sayin'? Man, he's talkin' about his penis and erections, I sure hope this isnt some kind of porno movie." Dawn of the Dead[Romero, Savini, Martin] Evil Dead [Campbell] Re-Animator[Combs, Yuzna, Sampson, Crampton, Abbott] Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas [Thompson, Nabulsi] Although not a horror film, Fear and Loathing is prob my fave commentary I own. Hunter Thompson is INSANE!!!!!!!
i just watched Cannibal the Musical with the commentary the other day, and that one deserves a mention. funny stuff. del Toro's commentaries on the Devil's Backbone and Cronos are good, as well.
i'm trying so hard to not turn this into a Cannibal the Musical quote thread...i've had those songs stuck in my head for days! And when i don't have those songs stuck in my head, i have the Sealab 2021 theme song stuck in there. i don't know whether to make a mix cd or kill myself.
oh man! http://www.cannibalthemusical.net/songs.shtml has mp3s for every song in the movie. Shpadoinkle is blasting as i type!
You know, it's funny, but I was a bit disappointed in this one after loving his commentaries for Dawn and Day of the Dead, and Martin.
