As much as I love some of the films there, specifically Evil Dead 2, Santa Sangre, Tenebre, NOES... I had to go with The Shining as my favorite from this particular list. I wasn't about to touch "other" because then I'd really be in it deep.

Santa Sangre. Jodorowsky is a film god, so a good horror film like that in the 80's is almost an anomaly. I'm just not an 80's horror enthusiast, unless it is bottom-feeding-SOV-straight-to-video-big-box-VHS sleaze. I mean, my list would probably resmble something like: Santa Sangre Violent Shit Nekromantik My Lovely Burnt Brother and His Squashed Brain 555 Blood Diner Black Past etc. etc.
That's a tough one between "Day of the Dead" & "Hellraiser", but I truely think "Hellraiser" was the greatest horror film of the 80's. It was so refreshing and so original. To this day it kicks you back in your seat and freaks you the fuck out. It's sad that it's really the only good one. Although 1988's "Hellbound" was close, the sequels just never matched up to the original, nor were ever worthy.
It took me a while to finally vote in this poll because there are so many great films from the decade. I'll have to go for Inferno (just watched it for the first time ever, most horrifying experience of my fucking life).
A very difficult one, although I picked Santa Sangre just so it would get another vote. The film is incredible, but so is The Shining, The Evil Dead, Return of the Living Dead, Cannibal Holocaust, Videodrome, and The Beyond, all of which are also perfect films for me. Also worth mentioning: A Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Dead & Buried, The Woman in Black, Combat Shock, The Dead Zone, The Evil Dead 2, Hellraiser, Hellraiser II, Inferno, NOES3, Pin, Re-Animator, From Beyond, Spoorloos, Tenbere, Angel Heart, Bad Taste, The Company of Wolves, Creepshow, Stagefright, The Fog, Friday the 13th Part 2, Hell Night, The Hitcher, Lifeforce, Maniac, Motel Hell, The Lost Boys, Near Dark, Paperhouse, Phenomena, City of the Living Dead, They Live, The Thing, and last, but CERTAINLY not least, The Toxic Avenger
Very tough but I went with FT13th, mainly because it kickstarted slasher films. And I love me some slashers.
Clearly, the only correct answer is The Thing. But the lack of Sleepaway Camp on the list makes me think you're all a bunch of baldies.
I love the 80s. A slew of great horror films, but Evil Dead is king here. The Thing comes extremely close.
just because i'm astonished that anyone thought to list it as an alternate, i have to go with "angel heart"... but thats just my snotty side copping out for lack of any reasonable way to choose a "best"...
Lots of good choices. Went with The Thing. Tenebre, another favorite, was the movie that got me into Argento and Italian films so it holds a strong spot for me as well.
What would be really great here as a forum feature would be the ability to change one's vote. I kind of wish I went with Santa Sangre instead. Call it very late voter's regret.
thats why i never actually vote these things. anytime anyone asks me "best" or "fave", i tell them they'd better sit down because the closest i can come to a definitive answer is a 10-faves list for each genre, sub-genre, and usually by around the 4th of each, i start second guessing, and the whole presentation is shot. spend no time with regret, fair luna...(hehe, we're colonizing your namesake in 2015!! check out nasa's website!)...instead look forward to the next time you can watch SS, or even the next time you watch the one you voted for, and see all the reasons you voted for it.
An American Werewolf in London. That and Return of the Living Dead are my two favorite horror movies ever.
It's funny to see these because many times I forgot how I voted. It looks like I went with RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, which is what I would pick today, with THE BEYOND being the next closest contender. Still watch and enjoy both of those on a regular basis. A lot of these films I really like, but they aren't my absolute favorites.
