I have a lot of favorite movies from the 70's, but Dawn of the Dead is at the top of the list, quickly followed by Carrie.

Here's a list of films that are great enough in my opinion to be called "the best" of the decade, other than the two I just mentioned:

    Halloween
    Deep Red
    Suspiria
    The Hills Have Eyes
The Last House on the Left
    Nosferatu the Vampyre
    Don't Look Now
    Don't Torture a Duckling

I would have included The Exorcist on the list, but anymore it just seems more like a drama, IMO.

And I agree with dan, besides the 80's this is certainly the best decade for horror.

yeah that was probably one of the scariest non-action scenes ever in a movie. talking about how the shark's eyes would roll back as they bit was a really "nice" touch that really put the image into the viewer's head. you could seriously pictue being there, floating in the water, surrounded by sharks. creeps me out to this day.

...and bathing with beautiful women... :D

I think I saw this one at the drive-in years ago. Isn't it the one where the screen flashes red so you can hide your eyes when the gore was supposed to happen? If it's that one, I remember being quite dissapointed in it.

    The Exorcist, without hesitation.

I picked Texas Chainsaw Massacre. As much as I like Eurohorror, zombies, etc., I just can't help but return to this film time and again. The grittiness, the implied gore (sometimes less is more!), the abrupt but cool ending. One of the few films I still don't like to watch in a darkened room (and I'm man enough to admit it!)

Don't feel bad, TCM and The Exorcist are the only 2 movies I can't watch alone at 3am with the lights out and the sound cranked up. :nervous:

The heck with the motors...it's made me nervous about taking a bath with a girl ever again! Stick with showers! :nervous:

I don't agree with you a lot but on this one thing I agree with you completely. Let's just try not to make it a habit ok? ;)
I had no idea you loved 70s music. I may have to start cutting you some slack. :D

Voted for EXORCIST, but it just barely wins. I could have picked just about any of the films here and felt okay with it.

I find it interesting that no one who picked Dawn of the Dead (78) as the best of the 70's also picked Shaun of the dead as the best of the 2000's and only one person picked both Dawn of the dead (78) and Dawn of the Dead (04). I would have thought it would have been the opposite. I could see people haven't some resentment over the Dawn remake but I guess it's a little bit there with Shaun of the Dead as well. Or it could just be a coincidence.

I'm going to vote for Alien, it's pure magic. I will alternate between it and Halloween on an hourly basis :)

It was a painful decision to make. My God...this decade is incredible. Astounding. The absolute best, with the 80's in the runner-up spot.

It came down to Tobe Hooper's brilliant "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and William Friedkin's shocking "The Exorcist". I went with TCM...but the choice was not easy.

And special mentions must go to Brian DePalma's "Carrie", George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead", and Robin Hardy's "The Wicker Man".

    Brilliant decade.
