hard choice- but have to go with the exorcist since it actually scared me- it may be a bit dated now- but still chilling-

Yeah, that would probably be my second place vote for those very reasons--the movie still works for me and gives me the creeps. But I don't like it quite as much as NIGHT.

My top 3 would probably be 1-NIGHT, 2-EXORCIST, and 3-TCM. FRANKENSTEIN and FREAKS would probably round out the top 5, but I can't decide which goes first....

  3. Psycho (1960).

It set the standard for the entire slasher genre, which basically makes up 85% of horror films.

Not only that, it's a fuckin masterpiece. It's the greatest to me ...

Shouldn't come as any surprise, but I voted Black Christmas.

You know, I never understand it when people say this. I don't consider Psycho to be a slasher film at all.

Anyhow, I voted for Dawn of the Dead. :D

i went with Evil Dead. Kick off to a great trilogy and I have so many memories of watching it and being scared as a kid. Also, it is the one movie that i end up showing people all of the time.

DAWN OF THE DEAD won the "Best Horror Film" tournament I hosted a few years ago, and it looks pretty certain that people's opinions haven't changed one bit. Not surprisingly, the seventies films are basically blowing the rest out of the water. I went with the trusted and true HALLOWEEN, it is a film where all the elements, score, cinematography, story, acting and directing are all one unified example of perfection. There is nothing I would change in that film. Great tournament, Ash.

My Top 5 films that I'm most surprised about not making it to the finals....
    ...
The Thing - This film had the highest overall rating in our Rate/Comment Polls. What happened there?
    http://www.horrordvds.com/vb3forum/showthread.php?t=21612&highlight=Rate/Comment+Totals

Evil Dead 2 - I thought most Evil Dead fans prefer it to the first, I guess i was wrong. I always liked the first best

Jaws - 2nd highest rating in our Rate/Comment Polls. I guess some people have a problem calling it Horror

Suspiria - Greatest non US horror film ever in my book

Frankenstein - Thought it would cruise to the finals in a presumably weaker Classic pool

I have all but, Dracula, King Kong, Black Christmas, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Rosemary's Baby, Black Sunday, the Original Invasion of The Body Snatchers, and Noferatu, on DVD. I truly love all that I own on DVD, but my favorite movie is Evil Dead. I love it. I even have 2 different DVDs of Halloween, and have at least 3 different versions of Night Of The Living Dead on DVD. It was really hard to pick which was the best. They are all the best. But, why no Fulci movies or Cannibal movies, like Cannibal Holocaust, or Cannibal Ferox.

If you look through the previous rounds you will see when Cannibal Holocaust and some Fulci flicks were eliminated.

That's very true. To me Jaws is almost the perfect movie, because it can be enjoyed for the horror, adventure, drama, and comedy aspects. (I think that's why Alien didn't go farther in the poll: many would consider it sci-fi).

Jaws or Alien would've gotten my vote if it wasn't for Black Christmas. I had a really hard time choosing between those three movies.

Maybe people love those two movies (Jaws and Alien) but they loved another movie a little more. the 70's were really difficult to choose just one film.

I voted for The Evil Dead because it is the one horror movie that always gets a positive response from my non-horror fan friends. A lot of people I know don't like slasher films, nor do they appreciate the classics. They don't understand the subtext of the original Dawn of the Dead, don't see the psychological angle that makes The Shining a great film, won't be bothered to watch any Italian or foreign films, etc. Hell, I've almost lost friends after having them watch some Takashi Miike films with me. But everyone, across the board, digs The Evil Dead.
