Onto our third stop in our Asian tour the up and coming Thailand.
I haven't seen many of the titles on this list. SHUTTER gets my vote, but DORM is a truly great film, and I really enjoyed 13: GAME OF DEATH and ART OF THE DEVIL 2 as well.
I selected Other; The Victim from 2007. After that, I might have gone with Sick Nurses, also not listed.
Surprised those two weren't available choices, as they've both gotten pretty good region 1 DVD releases. The Victim even made the film festival circuit in 2007, playing at Fant-Asia, and the Dallas and San Diego Asian Film Festivals among others.
To be honest I've only seen about 5 horror films from Thailand so I compiled the list mostly from imdb scores and top ten Thailand lists from around the web. I didn't see those two films you mentioned on the best of lists that I saw so I left them out.
I got quite a few from this web site if you want to take a look.
I've only heard of one of these.
And both The Victim and Sick Nurses are listed on that site...
Unfortunately, Thailand is still finding it's voice in cinema. A lot of their movies are rip-offs of existing films. But many directors have gotten their education at American film schools, so the production quality is rapidly increasing. We just need the creativity to catch up, and that's happening as we speak.
I also noticed Meat Grinder on that list, and I've heard a lot about that movie too.
Yeah I noticed that. I must not of added them because he gave them both a 2/5. Obviously just his opinion, I'll have to check them out though.
Shutter...while I haven't gotten around to The Victim or Sick Nurses yet, I still feel justified in saying that Thailand is probably the hardest country for me to get into film-wise. I don't even really care for Ong-Bak or Tony Jaa's films. Of all the film's I've seen from them over the past decade, I think the only one I truly loved was Chocolate. It just seems like they haven't perfected making films yet. While they always seem to nail one aspect in a film (whether it's action, lighting, mood, etc.), there's always another aspect that's sorely lacking (and most times, it's the script).
Only seen three of the films mentioned. Shutter gets my vote.
Hm. I could have sworn I responded to this thread this morning...
I voted for 'other' for Body Jumper. Sars Wars was my second choice. But, I haven't seen any of the ones on the list...
I have to admit I havent seen most of these- but I enjoyed Shutter.
I've only seen Sick Nurses, Art of the Devil 2 and Shutter. I really liked Shutter though. Guess I'll give it my vote even though I usually prefer to have seen more movies before voting. But I really like Shutter!!
