I'm unexpectedly going to London next week and I'm thinking of picking up a few horror films while I'm there.

What would some of you consider the best blu/DVD releases to pick up? Arrow has some great looking sets, but I haven't really followed the UK releases very closely.

    Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Return of the Living Dead LE steelbook from Second Sight. Looks better than the US BD picture-wise, and has the original audio as an option! The killer steelbook is just icing on the cake of awesomeness that is this BD release. Oh yeah, it's region free too boot!

I'd second BDH on ROTLD. Although, I don't think the picture quality is any better. It looks the same to me. However, you do get the original audio and also some great features. The steelbook looks excellent too. The only other UK blu-ray's I own are Repo Man and Touch of Evil. Obviously not horror films, but both are good releases. Also, while I don't own it, The Devils looks like a solid release. It's only on DVD and missing some footage, but apparently it's the best release we're likely to get.

Cool. Will definitely pick up The Devils and ROTLD.

Any word on the Nightmare on Elm Street blu ray release? Better than the upcoming US one?

There's some awesome older stuff to find if you do some searching around. Some of my fav UK DVDs in my collection:

-Prince of Darkness (with Carpenter commentary)
-Starman (not horror, but it does have a Carpenter commentary)
-The Thing From Another World 2 disc
    -Don't Look Now Blu
    -Phantasm boxset
    -Creepshow SE
-Children of the Corn II (with director commentary)
-Dog Soldiers (with director commentary and deleted scenes)
-Arrow's The Funhouse Blu (it has a lot of bonus material that won't be on the Scream Factory release, but Scream Factory is the only one with a Hooper commentary)
-Hellraiser III (with director commentary and featurettes)
-Arrow's Maniac Cop Blu (better bonus material than the Synapse release, but both are missing the DVD commentary)
-Let the Right One In Blu (with director commentary)
-Intruders (alien abduction mini series from Dan Curtis. Not on DVD in the US)
-Arrow's Dawn and Day of the Dead Blus (contain UK exclusive bonus materials)
    -Paranormal Activity (includes director commentary)
    -Silver Bullet (includes director commentary)
    -Quatermass and the Pit Blu

You sure it'a region free BDH? All the reviews I have read have stated that it is region B locked.

Please tell me it's region free. I just ordered this through Amazon.uk as well as the upcoming Universal Monsters boxset (both Limited and for a grand total of $85 after shipping to the States!). Even though I will be purchasing a region free player soon (mainly for the Hammer films), I want to watch this ASAP.

Technically, no, it isn't region free, but the disc's region coding is easily broken by pressing the the Top Menu button on your remote when you get the wong region message. All of the HD content will be playable, but SD content is in PAL and will only be playable if your player can handle PAL.

Stupid question, but can I bypass the wrong region code message with my PS3?

Yes, the PS3 will bypass it like any other player.

A solid recent UK release is 88 Film's Puppet Master Blu-ray. Lossless and uncompressed audio choices, high bit-rate encode, booklet, reversible coverart, and region-free.

Thats interesting. Can this be done on all Blu ray players? I own a region B Panasonic BD80 and would love to have some of the region A stuff you guys have. Back to English Blu rays, the Hammer Blu rays The Plague of the Zombies and The Reptile are worth a look but are region B. In general though UK shops tend to be quite expensive for more specialist items. HMV seem to always have some sort of perminant sale on but is almost always the more mainstream throwaway releases you could get off Ebay or Amazon for a few quid.

That's the first I've ever heard of a way to bypass the region lock error on a particular blu-ray. I have noticed that the prices of the new Hammer Blu-ray's are very reasonable on Amazon.uk. I can't wait to get "Dracula: Prince of Darkness."

With UK Blus your always better off buying online as the UK retailers almost always sell things at the RRP. Would be good to know if this is the case witg region codes being able to be bypassed by the simple press of a button. I have no region A Blu rays to try out the theory with though.

I have tried a couple of times on region A discs, but seems the return of the living dead blu is a fluke. Doesn't work on the ones I have tried
