A horror film that involves a VHS store and a creepy board game? OK!

Why is there so much wind in that living room?

I've been sick for the past day. I do pretty good at kicking these colds in the ass - lots of rest and tons of fluids. I did just that yesterday - came home from work in the morning, slept all afternoon, slept into the middle of the night. I woke up at 2am and rented this sucker from Amazon for a whopping $7.00.

First hour is a snooze rest. Last 30 minutes were kind of fun ; some okay practical effects. Barbara was extremely underused and probably only has a few minutes of screen time throughout. Rather forgettable, in my opinion.

I have to agree, it's only 82 mins but is very slow paced, 30 mins passed with virtually nothing happening, the acting is a little poor, in particular the main brother, Barbara does very little, I enjoyed the gore gags, the head gag had me smiling and rewinding, but there aren't that many overall. It was ok for a watch, but would not revisit.

Really hots4? Fucking hell. I'll still watch it but fucking hell. How could you muck up such a solid concept?

This film was troubled by pacing issues. Its budget must have called for them to stretch scenes, because there are very few effects (two big ones), and the rest is just dialogue with long pauses and characters staring around. It's makes for a frustrating watch, especially when it's very clear the characters should Just. Play. The Game.

And that's maybe the most frustrating part of this film: the game. The film is built around a VHS/board game. It is the focal point. It holds the answers to the riddle of the film. But the game makes no sense and is in fact, as presented, unplayable. We see characters roll die, but they don't move pieces in accordance to the die roll. Instead, they flip a card, but the card is not tied to the roll of the die. The card then holds a riddle to where a physical key lies outside of the game. Once the characters retrieve the key, they place the key on the board. That's it. That doesn't make sense. It's especially egregious when the characters stop rolling dice and instead just flip the cards. So what's the point of the game again?

There is a fun voodoo doll motif, but by the time it gets interesting, the film wraps with a dissatisfying finish, where one protagonist confronts
his father, which itself is as under-cooked as the game! Do they love or hate their father? If they hate him, why are they searching for him?

I almost wish the brothers had spent more time in the VHS store and the horror riffed on classic movie monsters instead of a board game, if the filmmakers don't care at all about making the game an actual part of the film. Like, why even bother? And that's how I feel about watching this movie, too--why bother?

It's also a mystery to me why it was said that nobody had ever defeated the game before. Why not? It seemed pretty simple to me. Heck, the first key was collected before they even knew the consequences.

I'm glad to read that I wasn't the only one sorely disappointed with this one. Cool idea, but so boring.

I thought THE VOID was pretty lacking, but at least it had heaps of "real" gore to keep me happy.
