I was able to pick up the 360 hd-dvd player for under $80 brand new at FYE the other day. I couldn't pass at that price. There are enough titles out right now to warrent it for me. If it is over for Hd-dvd I have a feeling I will be raiding some bargin bins and building a nice collection.

Even though I have a Blu-Ray player, I was kind of tempted a week or two ago to buy one of the dirt cheap Toshiba HD players just so I could get stuff like Cat People, The Thing, and the Bourne movies. Really glad I waited...as Universal and Paramount can't be far off...but for those who did pick one up (or will in an upcoming firesale), you'll probably will be able to find tons of movies dirt cheap...plus have a nice upconverting DVD player.

Personally I'm not tempted. Those titles will hit Blu-Ray soon enough.

Microsoft throws HD-DVD under the bus

Microsoft throws HD-DVD under the bus:

Microsoft has issued a statement today saying that it is not concerned with reports that the HD DVD will be joining the choir invisible. It said, "We do not believe the recent reports about HD DVD will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace, As we've long stated, we believe it is games that sell consoles, and Xbox 360 continues to have the largest next-gen games library with the most exclusives and best selling games in the industry."

The final nail is mere hours away...

Japanese news site Nikkei.net has just announced that Toshiba's plan is to immediately stop manufacturing all HD-DVD products (both players and recorders), and to stop selling them at end of March. The official announcement will happen at the press conference set for 5 PM Tokyo time. We'll be back with Toshiba's official statement as soon as it comes in.

Thanks to Keiko S. for the translation and links. Stay tuned...

    (LATE UPDATE - 2/18/08 - 3:30 PM PST)

Okay... things are moving very fast now. Industry sources are telling us that Toshiba has a press event scheduled for tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday 5 PM Tokyo time), at which they're expected to make the announcement that they're quitting the HD-DVD format. That's just 8 1/2 hours from now. Rumor is that hardware and software sales will be discontinued in early March, but we expect official details soon. We'll post more on this as it comes in.
Also, we haven't confirmed this with the studio yet, but it seems likely: Format War Central is reporting that a Technicolor insider has informed them that work has stopped on CBS and Paramount's Star Trek: The Original Series Remastered - Season Two HD-DVD release. They're saying that Toshiba was financing the production as part of an exclusive arrangement to have the title on HD-DVD only, and they've now pulled the plug.

We expect that Paramount and Universal may have official comments of their own as early as tomorrow morning.

In the meantime, be sure to check back with us this evening for Toshiba's official press release as soon as it hits the wires. Stay tuned...

    Universal has announced support:

Hopefully Land of the Dead, The Thing and Army of Darkness aren't too far behind. I'm surprised they beat Paramount to the announcement, but then I guess Paramount has a lot of pride to keep.

Toshiba says they have no plans to release a Blu-ray player.
