Diabolik are having a Blue Underground sale (ends 9/28) here: https://www.diabolikdvd.com/product-category/browse-by-label/bu/busale/ Without browsing through a million Blu-ray.com pages about it, which scene is messed up? The teal on it definitely looks odd though...
Steel posted it on the previous page: Blue Underground going Blu-Ray I think the teal that's done right throughout the film doesn't look bad though. I have no idea how this film is supposed to look but the teal colour adds to the atmosphere from what I'm seeing in the caps. That subway screen grab for instance looks better to me with the teal.
So if New York Ripper is advertised with: Exclusive Limited Collector’s Edition includes Blu-ray, DVD, Soundtrack CD, collectable booklet, reversible sleeve, and 3D lenticular slipcover (First Pressing Only) That means it is the first pressing that is still for sale at Diabolik correct?
Teal is a pretty color - but c'mon be honest - the whole teal-being-added-to-vintage films is a "thing" now.
Detailed screenshot comparisons are up for The House by the Cemetery: https://caps-a-holic.com/c_list.php?c=5374
Now that's an improvement. The nuclear holocaust outside the windows, seems to be over https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=13782&d2=14605&s1=139590&s2=150862&i=1&l=0 https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=13782&d2=14605&s1=139597&s2=150867&i=6&l=0 And they also fixed the darker scenes, which were way to bright on the Blu-Ray: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=13782&d2=14605&s1=139583&s2=150874&i=13&l=0 Looks like they reduced the teal skies as well. https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=13782&d2=14605&s1=139591&s2=150861&i=0&l=0 This one I will upgrade, cause I can't stand the overblown contrast and other issues on the Blu-Ray.
They should have done the same for New York Ripper. Now that it's clear that the disc has a botched scene, they could release a replacement without the teal skies and subway scenes. Is there a screen comparison for the scene with the title of HbtC as well? This was teal galore.
Haven't found it yet, but yeah that was horrible. The skies were almost green The opening shot, on the tomb stones, looked like shit, as the stones was teal instead of stone grey. Are Bill Lustig color blind? Or I guess he don't care, it's all about the money. "Just slap some teal on there, it'll make the movie look more modern for the kids!" Seriously, BU needs to stop using it. It's not in every scene, but when they use it, they push it to 11. Thankfully Zombie wasn't horribly raped by it. Teal was very popular in modern movies in the 00:s and early 10:s, but now we mostly get more natural colors again in Hollywood movies. But sadly some of the older movies, still get the teal treatment. Just look at what Cameron did to Terminator 1 and 2. Even the old Warner Blu-Ray of Stallone's Cobra got it, removing the wonderful 80:s colors. Thankfully the later remaster went back to the original colors scheme. Another example was Walter Hill's The Driver. I got the older HDTV rip, which looks like a proper 70:s film, so when I got the Blu-Ray, I wasn't very happy with the overdose of teal... https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=3056&d2=3057&s1=28175&s2=28148&i=4&l=0 https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=3056&d2=3057&s1=28172&s2=28145&i=1&l=0 Even Alien had it once, but everytime they remaster the movie, the colors changes. The DVD was brownish, then it got a bluish tint, then teal, and now it's basically back to the original look. "Director's Approved", seems to depend on the mood of the director I'm glad that 88 films, Synapse, Arrow etc, don't use this shit.
I don't know. To me those teal screen grabs look fine and better than the dvd by a long shot. Plus I get a Grindhouse feel from it for whatever reason.
I owned the movie on VHS, LD, DVD and now the HDTV version, and none had any teal, since they didn't use it back in the day. The HDTV version basically looks like the Blu-Ray, when it comes to overall sharpness, but still got the original colors. I'm not a fan, when they go and change the look of a movie. Even though it's not as horrible as the old 4K transfers of Suspiria or Dawn of the Dead. I wish I didn't care about it, but after years of working with color correction, on our films and music videos, it's annoying. That doesn't mean it should never be used, there are places were it fits. But when even the blue skies are turned into teal...then NO https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=3056&d2=3057&s1=28176&s2=28149&i=5&l=0 An article from when Hollywood went overboard with it http://theabyssgazes.blogspot.com/2010/03/teal-and-orange-hollywood-please-stop.html
More comparisons of House by the cemetery. Blu-Ray https://highdefdiscnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/the_house_by_the_cemetery_2019_bluray_05.png UHD https://highdefdiscnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/the_house_by_the_cemetery_4k_05.png Blu-Ray https://highdefdiscnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/the_house_by_the_cemetery_2019_bluray_01.png UHD https://highdefdiscnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/the_house_by_the_cemetery_4k_01.png Still some teal skies during the credits, but not as heavy as on the Blu-Ray. Lots of comparisons on this page, inkl the original Blu-Ray release, which looks very pink in comparison.
The UHD of HbtC still seems to have some teal but it's OK now, it's negligible to me. New York Ripper on the other hand was not fixed and it looks even worse with the botched scene. In addition it seems that the UHD disc has even more teal: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x=132&y=116&d1=14588&d2=13261&s1=150599&s2=132570&l=0&i=0&go=1 What a disappointment. So I'll likely grab the HbtC disc but will definitely stay away from the botched NYR disc.
Nice. Even the new Blu-ray transfer easily destroys the old one... which I always thought was far too dark.
Yeah, it's a big wow. I've seen at least half of this film and just skimming those little screen caps it already looks far better than the copy I had. Much more vivid and alive than that darker print.
Another review for Daughters of Darkness: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Daughters-of-Darkness-4K-Blu-ray/260866/#Review 5 stars in every category, wow.
