Got this yesterday from amazon - I've watched it before on an old VHS but the picture quality on the three master's we get with this box set are miles better. I still find 'Maniac' far more disturbing that 'Nightmare' but Nightmar ein its own right is a great horror/slasher flic.

really? (the following contain SPOILERS if you have never watched Nightmare before).

Disturbed man suffers from flashbacks to earlier murders he commited (we see minor flashbacks until the whole story 'flashback' at the finale is revealed.) Can't tell reality from what he did or didn't do?
Treated with experimental drugs which subdue flashbacks.
Doctors hail it as a success.
Is wrongly released back into the community.
Alter ego re-appears - goes missing.
Starts killing people along the way (which feeds his disturbed mind etc) to finding where his wife/child (C.J.) live.
Flash back revealed which is the root cause of George's psychotic episodes.
Gets shot by C.J. a few times (C.J. doesn't realise it's his father).
Man unmasked is revealed to be Tatum and C.J.s mum says at the end "It's my Husband!" Cue woman screaming ~ cue Dolby surround.
Cue C.J. probably being funked in the brain after all the trauma and Nightmare 2 being released :eek2: (you see him smiling at the end) :nervous:
    The End
Cue Tom Savini denying he ever had anything to do with it and saying that the picture of him on-set was a Photoshop. :fuck:

Yeah he never denied saying he had anything to do with it or claimed the photo had been made in Photoshop - just that he had consulted on the special effects and wasn't actually part of the special effects team as the film advertised. He fully admits to being on set and consulting those who did the special effects, but claims he never actually did any of them.

Savini told me in 2000 at a screening of Creepshow that he had nothing to do with it and that they just stuck his name on it. Maybe that was when he was still a little more bitter about it back then.

Anyone else having this problem? I'm thinking I may have a defective disc, but just want to make sure before I return it....

On the first disc and on the widescreen version only (nothing freezes on the full frame version?) the scene where the killer is in the porn palace and is in the room with the stripper and the shutter windows with other people watching, it always seems to freeze and skip to the next chapter at the point in which the shutter starts to go down on him after he pays the girl.

Anyone else? I Would like to have a few more responses before I decide to return it. Really hate the idea of having a faulty disc.

I gave it a run through, both with the commentary and without, and had no issues. Sorry to hear, dude. That blows.

i was expecting this to be a little better. the beginning was really good, grabbed my attention. and the ending is pretty great, the last 15 minutes or so. in between it's got a few good scenes, or good pieces of dialogue, or good gore effects/kills, but for the most part the middle hour was really dull. nothing really happened at all. I liked the "The First Day" stuff, i thought it added a lot of menace and a sense of impending doom, which in the end does pay off, but the body of the film felt pretty aimless. for something that garnered so much attention during the time and drama leading up to its final dvd release, i guess i was expecting something more. i mean, this was the movie everybody was waiting years for a copy of?

Yeah I can see how the hype would mislead a first time viewer. I remember watching the UK cut of it years ago and not being very impressed. But for some reason, the film stuck out in my mind. The more I thought about it, the more I said to myself "Goddamn, that was one sleazy little flick". Eventually I wanted to see it again so I ordered a bootleg of the uncut VHS rip. After my second viewing, I appreciated it much more, despite its many flaws.

This movie definitely gets better with repeat viewings if you ask me.

well, i'm sure i'll give it another viewing down the line. it certainly wasn't "bad". the slow motion gore scenes were pretty incredible. maybe knowing what to expect, i'll be able to enjoy the middle portion more next time.
