It may be coming out on April 1st, but this is no April Fool's joke - SOLE SURVIVOR will be Code Red's inaugural DVD release under their new partnership with BCI. Directed by Thom Eberhardt, who later brought us classics like NIGHT OF THE COMET and the Snake Plissken on a boat spin-off, CAPTAIN RON, this 1983 zombie flick has attained quite a following over the years. Dubbed by their press release as "a cross between FINAL DESTINATION and CARNIVALS OF SOULS", you can be the judge when it streets later this year. Like with previous Code Red titles, this one will have a nice assortment of retrospective extras. Here's what to expect: Audio commentary with star Caren Larkey, producer Sal Romeo, moderator Jeff McKay and cult horror director Jeff Burr On camera interviews with Caren Larkey and Sal Romeo Original theatrical trailer Liner notes by NIGHTMARE USA author Stephen Thrower All this for a respectable $19.98 this coming April 1st. Welcome back, guys!
Good news, this has been on my hit list (granted, by reputation only as I have not seen it) for quite a while.
I payed quite a bit for this video at Amazon Marketplace about 5 years ago, never dreaming in a million years it would get a DVD release, let alone a SE with commentary. After reading all the great reviews for it, I was a little disappointed with it on my first viewing, I was expecting the "Dead People" to be a bit more pale and frightening, but after watching it a few more times it grew on me big time. So stoked to see this SE release and I'll definitely be grabbing this on the 1st of April. A cross between FINAL DESTINATION and CARNIVAL OF SOULS is the perfect way to describe this movie. LUCIO!!!!!
At first glance the cover looks cheap-ish, but it really has that eighties retro design that makes it work. I'll take that over the FROM BEYOND cover, which took an eighties design and made it terribly "modern" with lens flare and some terrible Photoshop tricks.
I've been waiting for this one to hit DVD for some time. Night of the Comet is a good film, but I think this one is more worthy of the fanfare. Not counting the lame Final Destination reference, the cover is virtually the same as that of the VHS.
This release will indeed be a purchase for me, although I wish some of the other code red titles announced would hit the street first.
The cover looks like the original box art for the VHS, if I remember right. Certainly looks familiar. My wife saw this one on video during the 80s and rented it for me about 5 years ago. Very creepy film, hopefully it will develop a new following on DVD.
Original Vestron Video art. I'm all psyched about this release. Sole Survivor is a creepy little gem and one of my 80s faves
I used to have this on VHS. I didn't care for it that much, worth a viewing, but I don't think I'll be picking it up on DVD.
I really hope they put out The Dead Pit soon. Too bad it won't have the cool 3D cover like the VHS, though.
Sounds promising, will be sure to check this one out. Very glad to see that Code Red has joined forces with BCI. Now they should be able to stick to a regular release schedule.
Picked mine up yesterday at a store that had it out early. Looks like a stellar release. I'm glad that Code Red isn't distributing through Media Blasters now. The packaging and disc duplication that BCI did is much better.
