I have a problem with families in peril, now that I have a family of my own, so any movies that fall into this category make me feel this way. Funny Games in particular really disturbed me. The scene when the child is killed. Although off camera, it has a lot of resonance!!

The original version of The Crazies. I found the virgin incest scene super disturbing. I own the film but have probably only watched it twice because of that. Sometimes I think "oh thats a good movie I should watch it again" and then I try to decide if I'm emotionally prepared for it, and the answer is always 'no'.

I would have to go with "A Serbian Film" couldn't stomach that film. Especially that rape scene.

I Spit on Your Grave - didn't know what it was when I picked it up, and wouldn't do it again. At least, not for the first half of the film. Doesn't seem like much of a point to watch that again.

The bath tub scene in "I Spit on Your Grave" always makes me turn away.

    Cannibal Holocaust

I saw an Exhumed Films screening of this and I'll never forget it. The crowd was drunk and rowdy when it started. But when the final credits rolled you could have heard a pin drop. Hardly anyone talked while everyone was filing out. I've never seen that type of reaction to a film before or since.

The animal violence really bothers me. I'll never become desensitized to that the way I am with on-screen violence against humans. And there's a really disturbing ugliness to the scenes where the filmmakers are burning the village. Ortolani's beautiful score makes those images so much more repulsive.

I pre-ordered the Grindhouse DVD and I've never even had the discs out of the package. I may watch it again some day. But I doubt it.

All the scenes in Inside involving the pregnant woman being attacked and having her fetus taken out of her via scissors.

Not too many, but one I watched recently had certain scenes I found VERY hard to watch. The Human Centipede. The scene where the Japanese guy finally has to give in to his urges and ... well, the poor girl behind him has no option but to ... anyway, if you've seen it you know what I'm referring to. If you haven't seen it, then I won't spoil it ...

A Serbian Film. I've seen all the AU, etc. To see that kind of stuff pulled off with a narrative and finesse is bothersome.

    Exorcist

The movie The Exorcist is a very hard movie to watch. It's just so freaking scary even though I'm an adult now. But it's still a horror movie classic.

Recently Header (2006)... what bothered me is not that it was effective. It seemed to try so hard to be deprived that it became offensive not for intended gross out but because it relied too much on shock that when ineffective neutered everything else. A lot of Rob Zombie's films strike me the same way.

House On The Edge Of The Park. Boob slashing part. Makes me want to take a shower after watching that.

I recently watched a film called The Life and Death of a Porno Gang and there were two scenes depicting snuff that I had to turn away from. I have seen many hardcore horror flicks but this one really seemed to get under my skin. These scenes were so effective because of the emotional context of the scenes mixed with believable performances and the pseudo-documentary style of the film. Filmmakers can try and shock an audience with gore or scenes of extreme violence but these scenes are merely superficial unless you care about the characters involved.

  16. Probably Cannibal Holocaust. I can watch it, but the animal violence always makes me cringe.

Probably Cannibal Holocaust due to the animal violence.

The contest is now closed. Thanks for the 100 submissions, it was interesting to see the ways different movies affected different people. Some off-the-beaten path recommendations, too.

    And now, the winners:
