Why would a "rape baby" be compared to a gay person? Even in a movie this stupid? (Okay, I think I see what you're getting at. But if the townspeople actually know this guy is the product of a rape, it is not made implicit in the text, subtext, or any offhanded references.)

I still think the movie is trying to do some sort of persecution-by-backwoods hicks. It's like a 90-minute version of that one 10-second bit from Silver Bullet where Marty's love interest's father thinks Marty's on welfare. I believe it's definitely an experience the writer had that he wanted to enact a kind of revenge on, but couldn't stretch it far enough to fit the format of a dramatic story and so the details require characters to be stupid. Which may almost be realistic, reflecting how assholes make many of us feel, but it's not interesting and doesn't work for a movie. The best dramatic devices in a movie play on actual arguments (in this case, intolerances) that make sense. None of the Asshole Characters opposing the protagonist are allowed by the writing or directing to go anywhere. They're constantly bashing the movie's head into a brick wall. Which, as you can imagine, is self-defeating.

Conflict doesn't work without intelligence to back it up.

I thought it might be similar to the monster inside young boy = fighting with the reality of being gay that Nightmare on Elm Street 2 covered.

So rednecks being killed with no strong motive is the issue then? I thought what they did worked well for the movie. It's not meant to be smart, it's just a monster movie.

For those wondering, Unholy Rollers is actually Anamorphic Widescreen in the 4 Cult Movie Marathon: Volume One. It's incorrectly labeled as Full Frame on the back cover.

The Beast Within was just a straight up homage to HP Lovecraft, even going as far as lifting names of characters directly from his stories. If there are any hidden themes, then they are the same themes (such as small town incest and the past coming back to haunt the present) that run rampant in his texts and certainly not anything that the filmmakers themselves consciously came up with on their own. I don't believe for a second that anybody directly responsible for The Beast Within had any loftier goal in mind than to deliver a gore laden, tits and ass extravaganza for early 80s audiences. I love this movie to death, but it ain't exactly thought provoking.

Though I wasn't aware this was a homage to HP Lovecraft I do agree with you that the people responsible didn't set out to make a thought provoking film.

oh my god, I cant stand that guy, he was such an asshole (abusive father of girl in beast within). I hated that he smacked his daughter when she didn't even do nothing..

I just ordered both Crawlspace and Beast Within direct from Shout Factory with their Holidaze promotion.

I don't remember either being that amazing, but I did enjoy both. I'm really curious to see Crawlspace again, I think I will have more of an appreciation for it now than I did as a kid.
