i read this over at joblo.com : SciFi Wire is reporting that Universal is hot to get a sequel moving to the recent remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD...but they don't want to remake the sequel to the original film DAY OF THE DEAD. Confused? Director Zack Snyder explains that he pitched the idea of remaking DAY to Universal as a sequel but that they weren't interested and were instead focused on making a new sequel to DAWN. Also complicating things is that Universal is the studio behind George Romero's LAND OF THE DEAD, currently filming. While Universal is anxious to see a new sequel, it's not necessarily a definite it will happen. Snyder says, "We kicked around some ideas, but I don't know what we're going to do with it. We've talked about it. I met with (screenwriter) James (Gunn). I met with the producers. The heat comes on and off of that." Zombies are quite the en vogue monsters lately with DAWN OF THE DEAD and SHAUN OF THE DEAD both finding success this year. Snyder is attached to direct an adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel 300 about the fabled Battle of Thermopylae.
The scattered history of zombie movies, with all their sequels, remakes, unofficial Romero tie-ins and overseas re-namings is all about as confusing and debatable as the true origins of the zombies themselves.
As much as I didn't love the remake I wouldn't have minded a sequel if there was going to be a direct sequel to the remake. which means all the main people from it were in it and would take place right after the first one ended but I don't see how that can happen. That being said I don't think it's a great idea. Bring on Land of the Dead!!!
All that was shown at the end of Dawn 04 was a camera being dropped on the ground and zombies attacking. It did not show anyone die but it is safe to assume that some of the survivors were in fact eaten. This is nothing short of a genius set up for a sequel. They gave themselves an easy out for actors who do not want to sign on for the sequel.
Re-making remakes, making sequels to re-makes, and making movies out of comic book characters and video games....... Hollywood has officially ran out of ideas.
I think they should, but start off where Dawn of the Dead (2004) ended. To see how the rest of them got away "IF" they did. I think that would be cool.
