i must be crazy, since i'm averse to pay about 15$ of shipping costs but i bit the bullet and pre-ordered that Larraz double bill
I just received a shipment email from Dorado for the Night of the Scorpion pre-order, so these have begun to ship out.
Received mine in the mail earlier today, along with the free bonus Argoman DVD & Electra One DVD... all nicely protected in a thick cardboard mailer.
Got to sit down and watch a Night of the Scorpion almost right away for once. The transfer is of a theatrical print (Dorado was upfront about that) and there's some spots/speckling but not a lot of scratches or other film damage. There's a bit of hair in the gate through a good reel of it too I'd say (reel 3 or 4 maybe?). It's a bit bright, a shot where a gal stands by a light and turns it on blowing her out really showing this. I believe theatrical prints require less light than standard storage materials. So I suspect they didn't adjust properly before scanning. It's not ideal but the reason why Dorado released it this way was because that's all the licensors are able or willing to allow access to. As for the film itself. It's a bit of a slog for the first hour with a little bit of titillation and just a bit of mystery; dealing with a couple of incestuous love triangles revolving around one guy. But then during the last half hour a genuine Giallo breaks out. If they had sprinkled these murders throughout instead and maybe added one more death towards the end this would almost certainly have turned out a lot better. And apparently it mostly takes place over a short period of time but you wouldn't know it by watching it. The wife has breakfast like five times but they talk like it's been just over a day. It's a wonder she stays so thin! So there's a reason why this doesn't make it onto anyone's best of Giallo lists, and really the only thing that can keep you going for the first hour is if you're more of a mystery fan than horror fan. And if the overly bright transfer whatever atmosphere was present is now lost. So while I'm glad I have a copy, and glad this treatment didn't fall on a better film, it's a bit of a disappointment. But that shouldn't be a total surprise, there are a lot of Italian suspense films that fall short of our wilder expectations. This is mostly for completist only and I do thank Dorado for giving us some form of it. Blu-ray had a trailer for La venganza de la momia which is interesting. Didn't Code Red announce that?
I got my blu ray of Forgotten Franco Films Volume 1 yesterday and watched the movies, great movies, whoever did the subtitles did a shitty job though, they seriously need to work on that aspect of their next Franco release. But the picture and sound quality was good, not great, but I'm glad to have the films released on blu ray. I do not understand what people were talking about when they said the credits were cut off on the sides of the movie, I was looking for that, and on my TV the credits of both films beginning and ending did not have anything cut off, everything looked perfect as far as framing.
Bill did in fact announce The Mummy's Revenge, without any release date as usual. There are something like 15 trailers on the Night of the Scorpion Blu-ray. I didn't watch all of them, but am already interested in Evil Eye (1975) and Knife of Ice. As for Night of the Scorpion, the movie was decent. The last third of the film shifts into a more traditional giallo. Little in the way of surprises, but still entertaining and trashy. I really hope that the Jose Ramon Larraz upcoming double feature gets better audio & video treatment than Night of the Scorpion did.
oh glad to hear this, I will be picking it up, I liked the Dorado films blu ray of the Franco double feature, I will probably pick up more of their blu rays. Those 2 films were pretty good. I can't wait for Volume 2. I hope they can release a lot more Franco films, as well as films like Night of the Scorpion
