great thread all around! Although some of it is Greek to me.:D

Glad I kept the original Media VHS copy of EVIL DEAD because it is indeed closer to that blue. I agree it's scarier, and watching the film on VHS with the added grain is the way I first experienced the movie and loved it.

I saw Evil Dead for the first time on cable TV and I remember it scared the hell outta me, I thought it was Sci-Fi channel at the time. A few years later I picked up the Anchor Bay VHS and remember thinking it's not nearly as scary as the first time I watched it. It didn't look like the same movie and in the back of my mind I always wondered if it was, perhaps it's the old blue transfer that's really the difference maker.

I watched my Astro Records & Filmworks DVD from Germany. It's widescreen (matted) and has the reveal of Cheryl as is was originally and retains the lightening bolt. It's not as blue but neither is it colorful, it's more of a mute standard color. I tried getting screen grabs with VLC but it was giving me trouble saving the images so I gave up considering people seem only interested in a blue'er full frame transfer anyways.

Yes I am. There are two shops in a commercial Athenian area rhat sell only old VHS tapes from the 80s. Of course, most of them are copied...

Well, I'm only looking for the originals, but if you could get some of these I would be very happy:
Evil Dead - Diamond video/videostandard label
    Midnight - AVI label
    Expose(house on straw hill)

    And much more

Wow, I think that Japanese Laserdisc from 1985 is by far the best looking version of Evil Dead, just going by the screenshots you posted. That picture looks way creepier than the others. Plus I think more screen info is better :)

Well I got the original HBO tape and decided to do a comparison. It looks like the HBO tape has some of the same color timing as the Japanese LD, but isn't quite as blue:

    And here's the lightening bolt:

It's kinda fun to watch this version because there are some exposure problems in a few shots; mostly being overexposed. Without the extensive clean up there is much more of an home made movie feel to it.

What I also noticed is that Cheryl's nipple appears to be censored. During the tree attack her hand is pulled away exposing her breast. On the HBO tape it quickly fades black onces you get the vague idea that her hand is being pulled off. Shelly's taking her shirt off just before that remains.

Just to stick a quick post up here, I've just won an ebay auction for this version.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320253896001

I will be transferring this to DVD-R once I get it, Although only as a legally allowed personal backup copy, strictly for my own personal use. anyone wanting to discuss this DVD-R further is welcome to PM me. (there, everybody happy now?)

just incase anyone doesn't know, I think I'm right in saying this version has burnt on japanese subtitles.

just abit of advice, it's not wise on this forum to advertise trades concerning DVD-Rs of films readily available from legit DVD companies....
