I've only just recently bought my first copy of EVIL DEAD [the AB disc.] I will probably buy this eventually, but probably not for a year or two.

I just bought the single disc version at wallmart a few days ago. I don't mind double dipping at all. The dvd I bought says widescreen. As most of you know this movie was shot full screen. So to me it's just cool to be able have 2 versions of it. Plus my dvd came with a small book. The girls of evil dead booklet!!! Can't wait for this to come out!!!!!

I know it's been said before, but many, many, if not most widescreen movies are shot "full screen". That info by itself isn't enough to prove the intentions of the filmmaker. Many "widescreen" movies are in fact actually full frame film prints which are then matted to the proper aspect ratio by the projectionist. This is especially true of low budget movies like The Evil Dead because "hard matted" widescreen film negative costs substantially more money.

I'm not saying whether or not The Evil Dead is intended by Raimi to be seen full frame or wide, but from what I've been told ED was matted during theatrical viewings. Take that for whatever it's worth.

I didn't realize that maybrick. I've never been familiar with films matted projection. Thank you for sharing that with me.

Is there going to be a new image transfer?

Will this version come with a used pair of briefs from Bruce Campbell? That seems where Anchor Bay is heading... whats left for them to do with ED now?

You know what? I'm actually gonna get this, and I'm kindof excited to as well. First off, I love the cover art for this and second, I have the old Anchor Bay DVD (with the green lettering) from way back and I only paid like $10 for it so this isn't a painful double-dip for me. I read a review on DVDFile and this set sounds great. Well worth the money. Besides, I really want to own an open matte version of this movie, and I was never suckered in to buying any of the 'Book of the Dead' editions so I have no problem replacing my old disc. It had a good run. Time to replace.

Since the few reviews I've read haven't noted it, I'm assuming that Anchor Bay retardedly kept the warmer-toned print as opposed to the intended cooler-toned one (used on several VHS releases and the Japanese Laserdisc). I swore to myself that if this happened I wouldn't double-dip for any sizable amount of money, so if anyone finds any screen comparisons to the contrary, I'd be grateful.

    From DVDFile's review:

"This Ultimate Edition, while not the THX, director-approved transfer from Anchor Bay in 2002, appears to be more consistent."

Well, says right there that they used a different transfer. However, if the print they used before was the "warmer toned print", and it was Director Approved then maybe the warmer toned print WAS the intended one.

Well, that may be - but if that's the case, then in all the impeccable decisions Sam Raimi has made as a filmmaker, that would not be one of them.

The movie is better in blue, regardless of what Sam May or May Not Think.

I hope to God that's what they mean when they say it's different.

Nice, looks like it'll be one of very few double-dips for me.

That's how I feel, too. I paid $15 for mine. But I think these new extras alone make it worth buying this new version.

Well, it's an interview featurette. If you care about the movie and you like bonus features, I would think a featurette interviewing the cast members would appeal to you.

But if your boat's still floating, I guess there's no cause for complaint.
