So here we are at the end of another year. What were your favorite discs released in the last 12 months?

    My picks (in alphabetical order):
An American Werewolf in London: Limited Edition (Arrow)
Amityville: The Cursed Collection (Vinegar Syndrome)
Dead of Night 1945 (Kino Lorber)
I Wanna Hold Your Hand (Criterion)
    Link (Kino Lorber)
Quatermass II/Quatermass and the Pit (Scream Factory)
    Sixteen Candles (Arrow UK)
    Willard 2003 (Scream Factory)

This year I was most excited for films debuting on stateside Blu and definitive editions of favorites. My most anticipated release was definitely Criterion's Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films, but the packaging and lack of carried over dubs and special features from previous releases kept it off my favorites list.

There have been plenty of great releases this year, but by far the most appreciated is the Special Edition release of BIRDY by Indicator. It’s a film that is very under appreciated and not very well known even by cult movie standards given the talent behind it.

Damn. I wasn't even aware this was a thing. I'm gonna have to pick this up sometime in 2020. Love this movie.

For me, it’s the 4K discs of Alien, The Shining, and the original Suspiria.

Plus the Arrow Limited Edition Blu-Ray’s of Robocop and American Werewolf in London.

Fleshpot on 42nd Street (Vinegar Syndrome, BD + DVD) – The long wait for this title to arrive on BD is now long over and Vinegar Syndrome has once again knocked it out of the park. It's really amazing to have this version of the movie as it's not something I ever really expected to see!

Dracula's Fiancée/Lost in New York (Redemption, BD) – I'll take all the Rollin I can get on BD and this one did not let me down in terms of being an upgrade over the old Shriek Show DVD. Lost in New York is included here in HD as well and while it doesn't look as cleaned up as Dracula's Fiancée it's still a very nice upgrade, an enjoyable to revisit, and a great extra. Regardless of Lost in New York this would have made the list for Dracula's Fiancée alone.

The Devil's Nightmare (Mondo Macabro, BD) – You expect a certain level of quality from BDs and this one certainly doesn't disappoint but it was especially satisfying to watch this after watching my very dated DVD so many times while hoping for a BD release, there's even the option to watch it in French with English subtitles. Always really liked this one but feel almost like I enjoy it even more now; I've watched this new BD about 5 times so far.

Opera (Deluxe Edition, Scorpion Releasing, 3xBD) – Held out for a long time for this over the much cheaper standard edition and in the end was happy enough with what I got, the package with it's multiple versions was just too appealing to not wait for.

Blood Hunger: The Films of Jose Larraz (Arrow Video, 3xBD) – Vampyres was a nice upgrade even though it wasn't a movie I was crazy about buying again, but it is one I seem to enjoy more and more over time. The other two titles were the main draw though. It was great to revisit The Coming of Sin after only seeing it on a low quality, cut DVD. Then, of course, there is Whirlpool and even though I thought it was just OK it's nice to finally have a great looking, official release of it.

Emanuelle in America (Mondo Macabro, BD) – Not much to say about this one except that it was impossible to resist and well worth buying!

The New York Ripper (Blue Underground, BD + CD) – After the amazing release of Zombie last year I really couldn't turn this down + I got a great deal on a pre-order! I wish Blue Underground had done such a great job on these Italian movies back when they started doing BDs but I give them a lot of credit for really turning things around like Arrow did years ago.

Lust for a Vampire (Scream Factory, BD) – Another that I don't have much to say about but have been wanting on BD for a while; the Karnstein Trilogy is finally complete on BD!

The Devil Rides Out (Scream Factory, BD) – It's unfortunate that this is the very slightly shortened US version but the difference is almost imperceptible and this is also an improvement over the existing BD both in terms of quality and the lack of revised special effects. Normally this type of thing would really bother me but at least it can be justified as being the US version and, like I said, the difference is not really noticeable. They even included that bullshit version I didn't buy as an extra...

    Also, The Worst of 2019:

    The Next Victim/Forced Entry
(Dark Force Entertainment, BD) – I'd been looking forward to this since Code Red announced it for DVD and was even more excited when it wound up being a BD but when Dark Force finally had it up for sale it wound up being a huge disappointment even before my order could be delivered. I like how the director's allegedly intended version is presented here in mostly HD, but I loathe the fact that the version of this movie that everyone (presumably...) was expecting and the one I wanted to see was not included. Had the version from the VHS tape been included here, in whatever form, this would not have been such a bad release, but it wasn't and so it's a real disappointment instead because there's a decent bit missing from the included versions.

We just need Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter, which technically is a fourth Karnstein film due to a late reveal.

Captain Kronos has been released on blu-ray in at least three other countries: Spain, Australia, and Germany.

Suspiria - Synapse releasing Argento's magnum opus on Blu-ray was literally my most wanted desire since early in the format... Until they released it on UHD. There's really not much more to ask.

Tammy and the T-Rex - A guilty pleasure of mine that I had no concept even had an uncut version. Then they release it on UHD. And then they included an interview with Denise Richards!!!

Eegah!: Special Edition - It just tickles me pink that this got a 4k restoration and looks so damn good. Yeah there's better movies and better restorations this year but that someone was crazy enough to go all in on the negative for a public domain film is just

    Disappointments:

Opera "Deluxe Edition" - This actually came close to being an absolute favorite but the dub-titles are a big problem for me. You can keep your alternate ratios and cuts of the film I don't need those. And I probably could have lived without the image stabilization. But accurate subtitles are a must for me and the English track is different enough for the incongruities to be apparent. The 2.35:1 framing could have been shifted slightly up to but that's a minor problem in a couple of shots.

Fearless Vampire Killers - I've been anxiously awaiting this release for a decade now and for it to be dumped on Warner Archives with such a mediocre transfer is really disappointing. Comparing it with the European releases I found these old transfers more film like even with all their other problems. With the possible day for night scenes I find the imports a little too blue so what really needs to be done on these I don't know but I'd like an explanation from WB. Hopefully better elements and more effort will come together for a UHD another decade from now. :(

Kronos is a particular fave of mine. I'd even like it without Caroline Munro, that's how good it is.
