I watched Alien Factor today for the first time in over 30 years. The movie is only 80 minutes long and still has some slow spots. You can tell it is an incredibly low budget film but that is part of the charm. The special lighting effects seem prehistoric but I have a fond spot for stop motion animation which was used for one of the alien creatures. Even with the low budget the filmmaker had no issue showing the creatures at length. They weren't hidden in shadows or shown from a distance. The blu-ray looked better than I could have expected too. My only issue was that the sound seemed overdone. Overall I could see where some people wouldn't care for this film but if you are a fan of low budget cheesy films this is well worth picking up. You can tell the film was made with love.

So for the Fred Olen Ray fans - I have only seen Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (which is great) but none of his other movies. Just curious if a few of you would post what you consider to be your top five list for his movies

Tread carefully. I would also endorse his Biohazard Blu Ray.

I'd recommend Scalps, but it does require an affection for that particular brand independent low-budget horror - probably comparable to The Alien Factor, but even more loosey-goosey. It isn't as deliberately comedic as Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers. Another Fred Olen Ray I like is The Tomb, which also stars Michelle Bauer. The Tomb does have a sense of humor, hinting perhaps that Fred Olen Ray was aware that it wasn't within his power to scare his audience out of their wits, but it isn't as slapstick as Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers. It concerns a sexy Egyptian vampire/mummy/sorceress who performs blood sacrifices to maintain her youth.

I'm personally looking forward to Retromedia's release of The Alien Dead - I guess I'm hoping I'll get the same enjoyment from it that I got from Don Dohler's The Alien Factor.

You gotta work to pay the bills or maybe he always wanted to do an Xmas movie! A friend of mine was the other co-writer.

I received The Alien Dead earlier today. Since it was shot on cheap 16mm film stock, it's never going to look great, but the Blu-ray transfer is a big improvement over the old DVD. Audio is uncompressed PCM. The old DVD bonus features are all ported over. This is probably about the best the film can look, and the best it ever will look.

Fred's first feature The Brain Leeches from 1978 (54 minutes) is also included in 720p. Shot in B&W for under $300, it looks to be sourced from an old video master. There's also an audio commentary from Fred.

The Halloween Planet (25 minutes) is included from 1981, in SD. Apparently filmed for TV, but never aired, it features some of the cast from The Alien Dead and original Superman Kirk Alyn. A commentary track is also on it.

The old DVD was pretty shabby looking. I'm excited for this.

I watched it last night, it's definitely rough in spots and has a "short ends" feels to it. When I first watched this I really hated it but knowing it was made for pocket change by a filmmaker finding his voice - given the context of Ray's overall career: light horror and breasts - it makes a lot of sense. Thoroughly enjoyed it. And the other feature(s) are a great bonus.

I didn't see your post till now or I would have replied earlier. These are my five-

    1. Deep Space (I love this movie, the tone of it kind of reminds me of Night Of The Creeps. Sci-Fi/Horror with some humor)
    2. Armed Response (Lee Van Cleef!)
    3. Cyclone
    4. Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers
    5. Eyewitness (saw this on tv a few months ago, pretty good)
