Zombie vs. Shark may be ridiculous, but it also rules.

It wasn't a white shark by the way- it was a tiger or bull. I can't remember right now, it's been a while since I've seen it.

Actually, I love the film, but that scene is laughably bad.

I'm divided between seeing this scene as hilarious or genuinely amazing. Either way, I can't imagine my life without the concept of "Zombie Vs. Shark" being a part of it.

Even though I still think the scene is really stupid, this thread has put me in the mood to watch the movie again.

The whole scene was brilliantly executed.

Lately, Ive been thinking about this scene a lot, and I cant figure out how they did it. They must have thrown a guy in full zombie makeup in with a shark. Who the fuck would volunteer for that role?!?! I think the question here should be about the actor, was he stupid or cool?

Well, you seem to have missed the fact that it was the fish' trainer (or what you call it) who did the scene. Might have been mentioned in the commentary? I thought it was common knowledge among Fulci fans. I thought wrong :)

Crazy, thanks for the info. I dont think Ive ever watched this with the comentary on. I didn't know there was such a thing as a fish trainer. In the Jaws commentary there was some discussion about how 'you cant train sharks'. Interesting that Fulci could find someone to do it, but Spielberg couldn't.

I read a review in Fangoria stating that they had to drug the shark to make it docile enough to use for the scene. It's been a few years since I've seen the film but I still remember how well done I thought this particular scene was filmed. The movie itself isn't very well paced and really is mostly known because of the over the top gore effects. That hasn't stopped me from owning the laserdisc as well as two DVD versions. No doubt I'll pick up the blu-ray when it becomes available too. Here are a couple of shots of the topless scuba diver that several people said was the highlight for them.

I had assumed he was a shark trainer of some kind, but I see others have confirmed that.

The scene has so many difficult elements that it really is a great achievement in cinema. You have excellent underwater photography, a guy in a full body zombie suit (which looks damn good, holds up underwater, and there's no completely obvious oxygen) and an uncommon yet dangerous animal like a shark. The logistics of shooting such a scene are mind bending. Plus they had to tell a girl to take off her top and go swim with shark.

Shot today that would be a CGI shitfest which probably wouldn't impress anyone. To hell with 1979's Superman "You'll believe a man can fly," Zombie's was "You'll believe a zombie can wrestle a shark."

Lmao, that must have been a fun day on set. What do you think they used to drug a shark in 70s? A 5th of vodka and a bottle of Quaaludes? :glasses:
