UPDATE 4/3: Originally, it was an April Fool's prank I pulled, but now it turns out...it's real!!! :D I repeat; this is as of this moment 100% real!

I want to thank Chrismac87 who provided the info first.

But for my extents and purposes, here was my April Fool's post:

This was posted on Well Go USA's Facebook last night!!!:

"Stay tuned. Because when there's no room in hell....the dead will walk the Earth."

I predicted this would happen!!! :D

Well, considering Midnight Factory was to send the replacement discs for their 4K Dawn of the Dead shitshow "at the end of March," I have been waiting for an announcement.

This actually isn't an April Fool's Joke FYI...

I talked with an insider who confirmed they did get the film for release a few weeks ago.

The way I see it is you can't have too many versions of Dawn of the Dead. Bring it on.

Well I'd like to see a link to that exact Facebook post for starters.

OK, I know we had out fun, but seriously, now that April Fool's is over, did Well Go really acquire Dawn?

I was told by an insider the film was acquired by them for a theatrical re-release as well as a Blu Ray within the next year. They did really well with PHANTASM and at the time, the rumor was that they got DAWN for distribution. I'm not sure if it was an actual April Fool's joke that they'd take the post down to be honest... what would be the point in that? I imagine it was announced too soon or they felt people might actually think it's a joke so they took it down for now. Not entirely sure but I've never had this person I talked to steer me wrong, and it was also well before April Fool's that he and I talked about this possibly coming out through them.

Did he happen to mention anything about which cut (or all three), a possible remaster and/or 3D?

I'm not certain, but he did speculate it'd be for all 3 versions and the possible 3D conversion since it was apparently a hefty cost.

From what we've been told a Dawn of the Dead theatrical re-release in 3D was an absolute under Rubinstein's conditions. Looking it up, it would seem Rubinstein did the 3D conversion himself after 2004 (time of the remake) so it's been a decade now! That was quite a few years ago so maybe he's cracked under the debt he incurred with the 3D post-conversion he's done, but I can't imagine he'd walk away from it either.

Well Go USA does theatrical distribution so they're very possible. And any success with Phantasm could very well pave the way for DotD.

Can't say I'm very hopeful of the transfers we ultimately end up with. Rumors swirl he was unhappy with what little return he got outta the Anchor Bay deals. So Rubinstein might stick 'em with a decades old scan completed under fuck all what conditions in order to squeeze every penny after so many years.

I just want them to pop this off and move on to Martin and other titles Rubinstein is holding hostage, and so that we can ultimately move on to the next step which is to get the true remaster we need for UHD. Hopefully before Romero's dead. :(

    Oh, alright then!

What do you know, I came here to pull an April Fool's prank when all this time it was real! Guess the joke's on me. :p

I was serious though; I had a good feeling Well Go would acquire this.

Who is this Rubinstein guy and why did he spend so much $$$ on getting DOTD done in 3D and then not release it?

I need to give the theatrical cut a re-watch. Last time I tried to sit through this I'm pretty sure it was the extended cut which I didn't like much. I found out later that even fans of the film didn't really recommend that cut.

Rubinstein was the film's producer. He owns the rights to Dawn, Martin and a few of Romero's other films. Shout! tried to get the rights when they obtained Day, but he wanted too much money. He sunk almost $10 million to convert the film to 3D, something even I who loves 3D don't really care for. This film needs a proper 4K scan for all three cuts. Midnight Factory is now saying that their 4K replacement disc for the Argento cut will be fixed at the end of this month. I'll believe it when I see it.

So the 3D theatrical will hit around Halloween with the BD set slated for 2018?

We've all waited for this long enough and it better be done right...no excuses!

To my knowledge, that's always been a fan project (Extended Mall Hours). I love the cut and enjoy watching it now and again. That wasn't easy to get. Naturally it's now on YouTube.
