Some big news today (no word on a home video release yet):

    http://www.ew.com/article/2016/10/19/night-living-dead-4k-restoration-world-premiere-moma

"They’re coming to get you, Barbara — all over again!

EW can exclusively reveal that George Romero’s 1968 horror classic Night of the Living Dead has been digitally restored by New York’s Museum of Modern Art and The Film Foundation. The 4K restoration will receive its world premiere at MoMA as part of this year’s To Save and Project Festival, which is dedicated to celebrating newly preserved and restored films. Romero himself will introduce the film at the premiere.

“It’s an honor and a thrill to have MoMA restore and present a horror movie that I and a group of Pittsburgh friends created nearly 50 years ago,” the director said in a statement. “After working closely with MoMA and the Film Foundation on this restoration, I know the meticulous work that has gone into creating this new restoration and I am excited to terrify new audiences and devoted fans with a version that returns our film to the quality we originally intended.”

Night of the Living Dead is one of the most influential horror films ever made: The unsparing tone of Romero’s tale of undead cannibals would help usher in a new wave of more realistic — and graphic — genre films, like Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes.

More directly, it reimagined the concept of the zombie and inspired a huge amount of subsequent films and, of course, The Walking Dead, AMC’s adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s comic book. When EW spoke with makeup effects legend and Walking Dead executive producer Greg Nicotero back in 2010, he revealed that the show’s creator Frank Darabont had “used the original Night of the Living Dead as the holy grail of reference in terms of zombie performances.”

Tickets for the premiere of the restored Night of the Living Dead go on sale Oct. 22."

Yes. This means more to me than a 4K transfer and I actually have a 4K setup not to mention this is my favorite horror film.

Awesome news. I've been contemplating the Japanese release for years now but I knew something like this stateside was inevitable. Looks to be turning out better than I ever hoped!

But people "in the know" have been walking back the 9 minutes of footage being touted. With everything else we heard from Romero's lips to our ears turning out to be true, I'm hoping they're just letting their armchair get the best of'em. Carnival of Souls had some six minutes of trims, I wouldn't be surprise if NotLD had similar trims to appease drive-in distributors in addition to the significant portion they've always said was cut. It's about a reel of footage and that can cut distribution costs significantly.

    Dawn is a US release?
I'll be excited for NOTLD if somehow the deleted scenes are inserted.

Too bad...I'll continue waiting for a new U.S. release. I have a feeling the next release of this in the states will have all the bells and whistles.:D

Part of the quote at the link above:
Could that mean Arrow possibly? I know they previously released the film in the UK. Maybe they got US rights as well? Would be cool if all these new 4k transfers were getting UHD discs as well.

I was thinking this would come out in 2018 to coincide with its 50th anniversary I really hope that the 9 minutes of deleted footage will be reinserted into the film if not as an extra.

I can't find a definitive statement confirming or denying that the footage was indeed found.

They've already been screening it theatrically at festivals and people have confirmed it's not in it.

I believe Romero's walked back the talk about recovered footage. Apparently when he first talked about it they hadn't even examined the materials yet. He was under impression that if the discovered elements were what he thought they were they'd contain it. But it looks like they don't.

Either it wasn't what he thought it was, or it was but had been cut too.

It's funny reading the debates on Blu-ray.com about what the aspect ratio should be. While it was probably screened at 1.85:1 in 1968, Romero's pretty emphatic that it should be full aperture. And he was the camera man, DP, as well as director. He would know. Is it because he screwed up in 1967? Perhaps. But we should give the film the most flattering presentation possible, despite how it may have been shown in 1968.
