"Universal Studios was the home of a 3D Summit recently and producer Brian Rogers was on hand to talk to the press. Zennie62.com cornered the man to chat up Godzilla's big American return in 2012 courtesy of Legendary Pictures. Rogers talks about the genesis of the project. In short: Rogers expresses the desire to reboot the giant beast's mythos (similar to Batman Begins) but stay true to his roots. Also, expect the 2012 film to feature a monster mash. Yes, Godzilla will be taking on another creature or creatures."

I hope they get this right. I grew up with "The King of the Monsters" and I really want to see this be good. I don't hate the first U.S. movie, but that wasn't Godzilla. He would never run or hide from the army. He would just kick there ass and destroy half the city doing it. If they can keep him as close to the original (nearly indestructable, radioactive fire, fearless) as possible I'll be really happy.

Snippets of news about this one have come out every once in a while over the past few months. The best of what I've heard is that Toho is having their own people involved as producers to keep it from turning into another Devlin/Emmerich fiasco.

I agree - some the last VHS tapes that I actually own. We really do need, a the very least, a standard dvd release of both.

Thank God! The Devlin/Emmerich shitfest should NEVER happen again. I really hope Toho has listened to Godzilla fans in the U.S., myself included, and watch the director very carefully as to not have another disaster like the 1998 fiasco.

This sounds like a terrible idea.

Also, it's a shame nobody was there to stop Toho's own people from making that awful pile of you know what known as Godzilla Final Wars.

It wasn't nearly as bad as the 1998 disaster. I actually though Final Wars was kinda fun.

I thought Final Wars was fun as well, much better than the two before it! My biggest complaint is that the monster battles should have been longer.

Final Wars was a really good Godzilla movie.

Ditto! A fun movie but some of the monster battles were very short. The most disappointing was when the Big G fought Hedora, the Smog Monster. I laughed out loud. The battle lasted all of 10 seconds.

The director of the new American Godzilla movie is:

Gareth Edwards, director of the acclaimed low-budget indie Monsters.

I have very mixed feelings about this. On one hand, seeing what he was able to accomplish w/ a minuscule budget on his debut feature, the guy's got talent. On the other hand, his movie called Monsters featured very few briefly-glimpsed monsters. It was a slow-moving character piece w/ some very good visual moments. I think I speak for the vast majority of Godzilla fans when I say that Godzilla needs to be front-and-center in a movie w/ a lot of spectacular monster action.

    Your thoughts? ...

Kind of like Roland Emmerich's version?

I'm sure this guy gets the general concept of Godzilla, I wouldn't worry about it. Now if Will Smith is cast in the lead, it's time to worry.

Other actors to be wary of:

    Brandon Fraser
    Ryan Reynolds
    Shia Lebeouf
Will Farrell (or any of his SNL brethren)
    Zack Galifianakis
    Jonah Hill
Michael Cera (or his clone Jesse Eisenberg)

That's a mighty frightening list. Of course if it looks like it's gonna be crappy it's easy enough just to ignore it, like I should have done with the 1998 fiasco.

As for Godzilla: Final Wars, I know I viewed it once but I really don't remember anything about it, so that can't be a real good sign. Might have to check it out again to refresh my memory.

I doubt that Ryan Reynolds would ever do a Godzilla film even if it was offered to him. He is approaching the A list in Hollywood very quickly, but of course, money talks. As for the others, I do tend to agree with you. Brandon Fraser would be my top guess, though certainly not my pick. I LOVE Godzilla. I own every Toho film released and I even own the shitty 98 catastrophe because I'm a completest dammit!!! I really don't have a good feeling about the casting. It will be very difficult to find anyone "good", IMO , that will star in Godzilla. Although I love the subject, I don't believe this will ever be taken seriously by Hollywood.

You mean the one where the giant lizard masquerading as Godzilla is almost always obscured by rain, hides underground for much of the movie, and runs from the military? Did you even see that movie?
