The Criterion Collection has posted a photo of a film canister with Gojira on Facebook.

Both the American cut and the original Japanese theatrical version are streaming on Hulu.com from them so we can probably expect both cuts.

Unless Criterion is going to have some great extras there really isn't any reason to rerelease this film in the DVD format.

It's going to be great that the first Godzilla will be released by Criterion! I hope the extras from the 2-Disc Classic Media set will be included.

Could this mean a blu-ray may be fast approaching?

I passed on the Classic Media blu-ray as it got shitty reviews. Hopefully this means Criterion will release a blu.

Good detective work, x. Hopefully this happens - the film definitely fits under their "historically significant" part of their credo.

The Blu-Ray isn't the worst, but unless someone actually RESTORES the film, it's always going to look kind of bad.

I don't know how possible it is for Criterion to do a full on restoration, but if anyone is going to do it, it would be them.

No detective work, I'm just crimping off others.

I'm hoping for a full restoration by Criterion but I have some doubts. Toho is well know for not sharing film elements with others. Yet the fact that Criterion posted a film canister is somewhat promising (without context). People have said that Toho did a new HD transfer soon after the Classic Media release so we'll have to see what he get. Anyone seen the Japanese Blu-ray?

I'm only interested if it's a blu-ray release, has both cuts and been remastered. Otherwise I'll stick to my Classic Media DVD set,

I won't be getting rid of the classic media edition, as its a part of my godzilla box set. notwithstanding, provided its a blu ray release (which i would say is a certainty - criterion hasn't released anything exclusively on dvd in over a year, the last being L'Enfance Nue) and they provide some unique supplements, I have no problem owning more than 1 copy of the film.

I wouldn't be that worried about it. The fact is that Criterion and Toho have a long established business relationship that goes back decades, all the way to the laserdisc era. Their original LD of Seven Samurai (spine #67) came out in 1988, but even before that they released The Hidden Fortress (#11). And their past Blu-Rays of other Toho titles - Seven Samurai, High and Low, The Makioka Sisters, Yojimbo, Sanjuro and House - have all looked pretty damn good, if not basically flawless in some cases. Gojira might not command quite as much attention as Seven Samurai, but given Criterion's record on Blu-Rays in general, and not just the Toho ones, I think its safe to say that it will look many, many times better than it ever looked to an American audience before.

Also, the unwillingness of Toho to share elements is a lot less of an issue than it may seem. We're not talking about Eastern Europe or Latin America or even Italy here, you can get a film scanned at 2k or 4k, and on the very best equipment, in Japan, there's no need to ship an irreplaceable negative overseas, and the scanned files can be digitally sent to an American facility for clean-up and restoration.

I missed out on the classic media dvd, so getting this on blu-ray especially from criterion would be awesome.

Not in my neck of the woods, I haven't seen it but that doesn't mean you can't still get it. But if given a choice I'd rather catch it on blu.

Jaws has been my most wanted blu-ray, but if Criterion does this with both cuts of the film, plus using this new source for the USA version, this may be my most anticipated.

Jaws is close second for me after The Crow, but I would pick this up if criterioin got to work their magic.
