You've watched the trailer three-hundred times. If you're lucky, you actually caught a 35mm projection. (I took the day off work and drove up to Philly to see the film in a theater proper.) And now, Grindhouse Releasing are giving Duke Mitchell's legendary lost masterpiece GONE WITH THE POPE (1975/2010) its home video debut! Mitchell himself stars as Paul, a mafia assassin fresh out of a stint in the slammer. Looking for the ultimate retirement package, he hatches a plan to, as the poster says, "Kidnap the holiest man in the world." The ransom? "A dollar from every Catholic in the world." But that's neither here nor there. The screen is filled with gratuitous sailing footage, existential monologues about faith and the Holocaust, random music numbers, sappy holiday montages, endlessly quotable dialogue, some old-fashioned whackings, and everything else you'd expect from the man who unleashed MASSACRE MAFIA STYLE onto an unsuspecting world.

Filmed in 1975 around ideas scribbled on cocktail napkins, POPE remained uncompleted at the time of Duke's death in 1981. In a Perfect Storm scenario, the scraps of footage came into the possession of Oscar-winning editor Bob Murawski, who turned the refurbishing of Mitchell's film into a personal 15-year crusade, ofttimes utilizing some of Hollywood's best technicians to help finish the craziest exploitation epic the '70s never saw.

For its disc premiere (following a five-year theatrical tour), the company has obviously loaded up their platter with top shelf A/V, interviews with cast and crew (including actors Jim LoBianco and John Murgia, cinematographer Peter Santoro, editors Bob Leighton and Robert Florio and others), deleted scenes and bloopers, footage from its 2010 World Premiere, stills galleries, trailers, and plenty more. So grab your buddies, program your own Saturday night screening, and prepare for bewilderment -- you've never seen one quite like this.

Blu-Ray / DVD Combo Pre-Order (3/24/15) : now live at Amazon. Direct links at my sites.

Folks who dump on Grindhouse for the amount time between their releases really need to read that interview.

Just got through the majority of the Massacre Mafia Style blu-ray and this is by far the best disc I've bought in YEARS. Worth twice the price. Grindhouse kicked the shit out of this release. I'm still in awe of the fact that I'm holding a blu-ray of this masterpiece. Can't fucking wait for Gone with the Pope.

There was a screening of I Drink Your Blood in LA last night. Sounds like the Grindhouse Blu is imminent. Great news.

Agree, pre-ordered as soon as I saw that it was up at Diabolik. It'll be sad when Grindhouse releasing shuts its doors, a label that really cares and goes above and beyond on their releases.

Pre-ordered the shit out of this one--their DVD is terrific and this looks like a worthy upgrade!

So what's to become of DEATH GAME when they shutter? They've been promising that one for years and I have been impatiently waiting...

Now that I Drink Your Blood has been announced, I think S.F. Brownrigg's Scum of the Earth is supposed to be Grindhouse Releasing's last planned release.

Pigs was finally released by Vinegar Syndrome earlier this year, and Scream Bloody Murder seems to be a strong possibility for Arrow's American Horror Project series based on artwork clues. Hopefully, some of the other unreleased Grindhouse Releasing titles can find similar fates with VS, Arrow or other labels.

Yep, Scum of the Earth will be Grindhouse's last release. With I Drink Your Blood being their final title being upgraded to Blu, their end is nigh. Really a pity, since they put so much care into every title.

I was looking forward to Death Game, The Photographer and The Ice House, but no one knows what will happen with any of those titles, if anything, once Grindhouse is no longer around. There's no telling just how much work, if any, had been done on anything other than what has already been officially announced.

Question for everyone? Is the Grindhouse release of I Drink Your Blood only going to be sold at Diabolik? Since there is an X-rated feature included among the bonus features, I am guessing that the usual online retailers like Amazon may not be selling this?

I was under the impression this will be getting a wide release, but Diabolik is getting first dibs on preorders.

I'm sure it will eventually be for sale at other retailers. Amazon stocks Synapse and Vinegar Syndrome (and other studios) titles that are X-rated.

Isn't an X rating just for porn these days? That's what the Australian rating system classifies X as.

Sad to hear Grindhouse is closing down soon. Had no idea that was happening.

Generally "XXX" means hardcore porn here in the USA. "X" used to be an official MPAA rating, but the film distributor could still choose to go ahead and release it in theaters, or just do it as "Unrated". It's just that most theaters would not even release films with an X or as Unrated, so it was often commercial suicide. The rare exception were films like A Clockwork Orange, and even that was later resubmitted and re-rated to R for its re-release. Many films today would easily get an R rating, but would have been rated "X" by the MPAA decades ago.

NC-17 is pretty much now the official "X" of the MPAA since the early 90's, albeit rarely given as a rating to many films these days.

Or, at least that's the way I've always basically understood it... o_O
