it's definitely a new drawing. look at the teeth on the shark, the point of its snout, and the positioning of the girl's arm in the water. not to mention the added bubbles which make the shark look slimmer and obscure the girl's breasts. its a new version of the same scene. i wouldn't get upset about it, but i see the differences. and given the choice, i would prefer the original. this seems like an example of what SaxCatz is saying (sorry if i'm putting words in your mouth) about updating cover art. Personally, i'm not a fan. In pretty much any case I can think of, I would want the artwork to reflect the original poster art as closely as possible. Any deviation, no matter how small, I would probably consider detrimental. Even when it comes to the text at the bottom of a poster.

for my money, one of the most disappointing cover art changes of the last few years was for the dvd of Die Hard. Changing the tagline from "40 stories of sheer terror" to "40 stories of sheer adventure" completely neutered the concept. so disappointing.

Well essentially they are still the same. I wouldn't have noticed unless I saw the images side by side. I don't think it's terrible but the original art is better.

I wonder if the artists require additional compensation in order to allow the studios to use the original posters for DVD's/Blu-rays. I can't imagine why else they would alter/replace the covers.

I wonder if re-doing artwork for older releases are done by interns or something being given little jobs to do so they learn the trade.
Most re-dos look really cheap and not very professional.

I think both of these are somewhat on the mark, although I'm not sure how publishing artwork works. I used to think you'd pay the artist to paint, then the painting was yours as you paid for it. But now at least some are probably leased for a time period.

Then when they don't want to ante up again or the suits think "we can make this more compemporary and hip", bring in the interns to put some photoshop crap together.

Even little changes can feel huge. I had to go get the poster art for my Jaws custom cover and didn't even notice how bad the shark looked at the time, just the girl swimming with different arms and no boobs. Looking side by side, her hair is also different and her arms got bigger. It's not even the same girl!

Universal officially announced Halloween II on BD today with a street date of 9/13. The cover isn't the original art but rather a close-up of Michael Myers' face (pretty disappointing). But the great news is that there are some great extra features ...

    BONUS MATERIALS :
    • Alternate Ending
    • Deleted Scenes
    • Terror In the Aisles Documentary
    • BD-Live
    • My Scenes
    • Pocket BLU App

Retail is only $19.99 as well so this sounds like a good upgrade! No official news on Season of the Witch yet ...

Holy shit, a Halloween 2 release with extras!! Come on Universal, give Halloween 3 the same treatment (a commentary with Tom Atkins would RULE!!!!!!!!).

TERROR IN THE AISLES documentary? Is this the full length feature film that was released by Universal back in 84? I never thought that would see a disc release!

    Extras! No effing way!

I never bought the DVD, holding out for a special edition. Now I'm glad I didn't, I can go straight from VHS to blu-ray!
