    Hey all..

I am a hammer n00b. I have the countess dracula/the vampire lovers disc and absolutely ADORE both films. I think they are fantastic.

With that in mind, what should be the first few hammer films I should pick up to work my way into becoming a bigger fan of the studio's work?

    Thanks!

    Damn.

Well, Dracula and Frankenstein should be easy to get. AB are rumored to be releasing almost their entire catalog of titles in two-fers real soon. I say "rumored" because information seems to come and go.......

I'd look to those two-fers. Honestly - the only ones to avoid, imo, are She and Viking Queen, and Lost Continent. The rest are stellar.

Yeah, as someone who doesn't own any Hammer titles, you're in luck with these new double releases! The ones I'd look for first are:

    The Devil Rides Out
    The Witches
    Rasputin, The Mad Monk

... and obviously any of the Dracula type movies, just off the top of my head. I'm sure when I go over to my collection later I will kick myself in the head for forgetting a really good movie or two. :D

Hehe...I have 3 of those on LD. The two Frankensteins, and Brides of Dracula.

And coincedentally, last night I put in Evil of Frankenstein. I was pretty tired, and stopped it halfway through. But, it's considered to be the least of the Hammer Frankensteins, yet I found it pretty darn enjoyable. Unless it really sucks in the second half, I'm giving it a thumbs-up.

I've been waiting for Taste The Blood of Dracula for a while now. I only have a copy of it from cable, from well over a decade ago. I will definitely be buying that one as soon as it comes out on DVD, whenever the hell that'll be.

Of those - I'd go for Devil Rides Out and Mummy's Shroud first. Nothing wrong with the others, but they'd be the ones to go with if limited in budget.

    Luna,

You will get to see TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA on DVD in 2004 courtesy of Warner. I believe it is the uncut version. This thread was posted a while back. I can't wait for this as well!

Okay out of those, these are the only ones I don't have:

Phantom Ship (early Hammer with Bela Lugosi)
    spaceways
    One Million Years B.C
Dracula Has Risen From The Grave
    Taste The Blood of Dracula
    Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed!
    Shatter
    Tales of Frankenstein

Now, a few of those arn't out yet. I've never heard of "Phantom Ship". I really really want Shatter, but opbviously don't need the two-fer. I'm hoping someone with trade/sell me their copy.

    Dude, seriously buy! buy! buy!

I'm on it. The ones I can't get in the double-discs next week I'll pick up individually as I can. I'm going out hunting tonight!

You know, most of those are going to be on two-fers soon. The ones you can get soon as just the start. Good luck hunting!

    Frankenstein, Mummy and Dracula.

    Oh yeah!

You region free? There is a box set of all three in the UK, with nice packaging.

No, unfortunatley I am currently bound to region 1. One fnie day I plan on getting a region free player, but it's not in the forseeable future.

I know that there are some places that sell the 3 shrink wrapped together at a discounted price, so I'm going to try and grab them that way.

Hammer's "The Nanny" is available on region 2 DVD in the UK, together with a non-Hammer film called "The Blue Lamp"

Thank you so much for the info! I don't know how I missed that thread.
Oh my god. I need to buy that as soon as I can. I love that film, but have never seen The Blue Lamp.
