In an email sent to forum member Wes Ray, Columbia confirmed that they would be releasing Happy Birthday to Me:

This is great news, it sure has taken them long enough! The only thing that worries me is that this could be another of Columbia's full screen abominations. Regardless, it will be nice to finally be able to retire that muddy VHS tape.

Yup. It was surprising to hear back from Columbia. Even more surprising to see that they actually had HBtM on the schedule. :)

Hopefully it'll be widescreen, but honestly, I'll just be glad to get a better-looking print.

    Can't wait for this one!

Keeping my fingers crossed that we get a widescreen transfer first and foremost.

As much as i'd love to see it released uncut, i'll be happy with the theatrical version as long as it's not full screen.

It's great to know that Happy Birthday to Me will finally be released. I doubt it will be uncut but I am hoping we will get this in anamorphic widescreen.

That made my day! Great news!

  6. Columbia is usually good about the widescreen thing if they have a widescreen print. They like those flippers that have full frame on one side and widescreen on the other.

Anyway back to the movie, can't wait to get this on DVD.

Aye, great news indeed. One of the more entertaining slashers of the past. Hopefully it is widescreen, but uncut would be an awesome bonus!

I know in the past there has been some debate as to whether anything was cut or not. Some say yes, others say no.

Does anyone know what, if anything, was cut from the film?

To me, some death scenes (weight bench) look choppy and badly edited. Then again, I've heard the only scene which had anything trimmed was the brain surgery sequence.

    Anyone know for sure?

I've heard that Wes Ray guy is an effin' liar, though. One time he told me "THICK STICKS N' HOT TITS VIII" was coming out and it never did. I still haven't been able to forgive him.

I really want this film uncut. Although it has been probably 10 years for me, no matter how I remember it, I really want all the violence possible and intended. Then widescreen is my second most important interest. Gotta find out about the original length...

Well, just when I had given up on seeing any of my favorite slashers hit dvd this year, this comes out and makes my afternoon. Thanks for getting the confirmation for us WesReviews.

I hope there's some connection that allows Slaughter High to follow this in the near future.

As I said in a previous post I had the pleasure of meeting J. Lee Thompson once in late 2001 at a wedding. I chatted him for a few minutes and he told me how old he felt now that all the people he worked with are dying off, we also had a short conversation about what he liked to call the digital discs and we discussed the fact that he'd recorded commentary for Guns of Navarone and I asked him if he was going to do one for HBTM he said it wasnt up to him because when he recorded the commentary for Guns he told Columbias head of dvd production that he wanted to do supplements for it and he was told they had absolutely no interest. The last few minutes of the conversation we discussed Charles Bronson and Chuck Norris and his times with those crazy Israeli's at Cannon films. As many of you know he passed away in 2002 which brings me onto my rant about all dvd supplements be recorded quickly while the older director's and actors are still alive.

Yes, I recall when Thompson passed away. I remember feeling sad that now we'd never get to hear his thoughts on Happy Birthday to Me.

Though, in all honesty, I doubt Columbia would've given any supplements to HBtM anyway, even if he were still with us today. :(

The fact is he was very proud of this movie and I wish I'd got talking to him more for some behind the scenes info.
