Hausu 1977 (aka "House") .. Quite possibly the most f'ed up film I've EVER seen.

So I go to school with a bunch of rather eccentric film enthusiasts. So we're sitting in the cafeteria and I have my laptop with me. One of my fellow students tells me to go to youtube and look up this trailer. After seeing the trailer, I just HAD to see the film. It's not available yet, so I got it off bittorrent. Apparently Criterion will be releasing this early next year. I'll be buying it IMMEDIATELY and urge you to do the same.

David Lynch, David Cronenberg, Dario Argento.... they've got NOTHING on this kind of wierdness. I don't understand how a film THIS messed up could have flown under our radar, but it's a 70s cult gem if there ever was one.

    Here's the trailer:

If you can live with the fact that you've "stolen" something that isn't even readily available for purchase anyways, just look up "house 1977 torrent" on google and a few good links will pop up.

There's also a site you can visit to watch it online. http://www.asian-horror-movies.com/hausu.php

It's kinda garbage quality and it's in 2 parts but it's decent enough and has horribly translated subtitles... which just adds to the insanity of this thing.

I saw this a year or so ago (legitimately!) when it was shown on either IFC or Sundance Channel. Honestly, it was not all that memorable to me. I remember it kind of waffling between being a serious horror film and a comedy, and never really staying on one theme long enough to tell which it was supposed to be. And didn't the girls all have names that matched their personalities, like "Beauty", "Smartie", etc?

Oh my God. This trailer is the most bizarre trailer I have ever seen. Must get this movie when it comes out on DVD. If the trailer is an indication of the whole movie, this might be one of the weirdest, wildest movies I have ever seen, based on the trailer.

Yup you're exactly right. One girl is named Kung-Fu as she breaks out into kung-fu action at random parts of the film. One of the main girls is called Fanta... short for fantasy I'm guessing as she's the "dreamer" of the group. Another girl was called Sweet or Sweetie...

I think I'm going to attempt watching it again tonight lol. I just couldn't absorb everything the first time. It overloaded my brain.

Far out... Two things struck me. The giggling head. How did they do that? It looked awesome! And the man turning into a skeleton... If they were able to pull off the head, then why did the skeleton turn out so piss poor?

Also, is it just me, or do the for two or three bars of music sound a bit like the Poltergeist theme?

I've wanted to see this movie for years ever since I saw the Japanese LD for auction, I just liked the cover. Lost the auction, lost another for the Japanese DVD, but have the subtitled, 1/25/10 release from Eureka pre-ordered. This worked out good because the 2 I previously tried to buy had no English subs or audio. Hadn't heard about the Criterion release until now but I've already waited long enough on this one.

the Eureka MoC-edition is great and the movie itself... it's amazing how many original and totally crazy movies/series originate from Japan, but i'm glad i have this one in my collection from now on

I saw this 70's Asian flick by pure chance on IFC or Sundance late one night- really out there and I liked it. I was able to locate a solid bootleg with proper subs since this never received an R1 release.

Got to watch this recently and I gotta say that this is quite a unique film and that it's well worth checking out, imo. The little I'd heard about this movie didn't prepare me for what I saw and for that I'm glad because it probably made the movie all the more better as it exceeded my expectations with it's story, excellent style, and overall craziness. Definitely see this if you have the chance, if you were thinking of picking up the R2 release by Eureka! I'd say go for it!

It is VERY awesome, VERY trippy, and VERY unpredictable. It's a shame this film hasn't received the attention it deserves until only recently. I'm positive Criterion is going to make this a stellar release.
