Hausu 1977 (aka "House") .. Quite possibly the most f'ed up film I've EVER seen.

Well, I remember Criterion saying that was going to be the case, and it was with The Third Man when I got it. But the early pre-order prices for Hausu show a bit of a premium, at least at DVD Empire. 28 bucks isn't too bad, I agree--it just looks a bit less enticing when the DVD version is $21.

I buy less these days than in the past, so $28 for a Blu I will rewatch doesn't phase me either way.

Holy shit! Finally screened this one tonight at a local theatre. Had a great turnout as well. This is one amazing, unreal, unfathomable, and so gloriously absurd film! I have never before experienced anything quite like it, it's a trip and a half and then some!

The visuals are absolutely amazing, the story so ridiculous, the whole movie is just something you absolutely cannot afford to miss! Hausu is a goddamn cinematic masterpiece, and it's in a category all its own!

If you get a chance to catch a screening in your city before the DVD/Blu-ray are released DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO SEE THIS FILM!

    OUT-FUCKING-STANDING!

Damn, the cheapest I can find this one on Blu is for $40+ here in Canada. Guess I'm gonna have to wait.

As soon as I get a free day where I'm not swamped with projects, I'll be picking this up. Cannot freaking wait.

I watched this on blu today- Criterion did an amazing job with this transfer - night and day from when I saw this on IFC a few years back and the bootleg dvd copy I had (which was the only way to own it since this is its first R1 release - long overdue). I still think this is an amazing arthouse horror/comedy especially for 1977 - went against the grain and took a lot of chances and for the most part it seems to work when all thrown together- beautiful movie to watch too.

*glances at Sax for a second*. Moving on...

Finally got the blu-ray today. Good god this is a wicked transfer. Grain aside (which I kind of like), the color vibrancy is far more impressive than the remastered theatrical release I saw over the summer. My fav blu-ray purchase so far! Now I'm about to pop in the 30th anniversary of "Maniac" on blu.

I feel like I should elaborate.

There are parts of the film that work. Several work quite well in fact. For instance, the merger of animation and live action in place of conventional effects,
Mac's flying severed head, Melody's death at the piano
and a surprisingly perfect ending. There are guilty pleasures (every scene involving Kung Fu) and even a few outwardly cheesy moments that inexplicably work quite well such as Auntie (with skeleton in tow) and the cat "dancing" to the film's strangely haunting melody.

However, there are also several scenes that are either too stupid or illogical to have any effect other than ellicit a "WTF?" from the audience. For instance Sweet's death, Kung Fu's "death" or
Mr. Togo turning into a pile of bananas.
There are several more that I recall and probably more that I have blocked from memory, but these scenes detract so severely from the film that I feel they overwhelm the good aspects.

Finally, it is clear from the outset that this film intends to be an experimental film for the sake of being experimental. There is nary a "standard" shot in the entire film, as each shot seems to either begin or end with a "music video" wipe (understanding that this released prior to the advent of MTV so there is some creativity) involve a desaturation, over-saturation or filter, or be filmed (edited?) into a bizarre stuttered cadence that goes on for far too long.

There is something said about pushing boundaries in film-making, but this one pushing too many to be taken seriously or to still be fun.
