Ya know it's a damn shame The Thing did as poorly as it did at the box office. Bad advertising campaign perhaps? I saw it in theaters myself and I can't image it had bad word of mouth. Or perhaps something higher profile film opened the same weekend.

Yeah, but Blade Runner didn't do so well at the time either.

I think the audience at the time wanted slasher movies and nothing else...Carpenter's THE THING was just a little ahead of its time.

I love The Thing. These are two of my favorite movies but ANY TIME I am asked to pick between Alien or Aliens and anything else, I will always pick Alien/Aliens.

    Why?

They are simply two of my favorite movies of all time, if not my top two of all time. Huge fan of both movies. Not to take anything away from The Thing, though, because that would make my top ten too. I love both films but I can't NOT vote for Alien.

Alien. One of the greatest movies of all time. Not just in the horror/sci-fi realm.

I had to go Alien, largely due to the aesthetic of the Giger creation. The Thing is also a favorite, but the pacing feels better to me in Alien. Both have isolation, but the Nostromo adds claustrophobia to the mix.

The Thing is one of my favorite horror movies, hence my vote.

This was very tight, but I went with ALIEN ,I think it has been more influential.Of course, the original version of THE THING was an influence on ALIEN,so everything is cyclical I guess.

Easily Alien for me. Over time I've come to watch and enjoy the original "Thing" film more than Carpenters version. Not that it's bad. I didn't even bother to upgrade to the last release of Thing.... Alien is just perfect, even after all these years.

The Thing is a far superior film. Alien is just OK whereas the Thing is one of my favourite movies.

If it was a "Starbeast" versus "The Thing" poll, I would have voted for the former... But taking into consideration the considerable differences between "Starbeast" and the final "Alien", plus the fact that "Alien" is tainted by the existence of all the horrible sequels which change the aliens into ants, whereas "The Thing" is (for now...) unsoiled by a sequel... it's "The Thing".

That's the one side benefit of having a great movie bomb at the box office. In retrospect it's a damned good thing! :)

A great matchup. Both are excellent examples of sci-horror but the visual look of Alien and the sense of dread it inspires just push it past JC's The Thing....by a very narrow margin.

I thought Morricone did the score.

I love Alien, but I could watch The Thing almost every day. Well, every day that it snows, at least.
