Another easy vote, this time in favor of Carpenter. The Thing is such a flawless and beautifully realized film. It has a large cast of characters, but Carpenter and the actors were able to make me care for every one of them. They are all likable, and even if that weren't the case, there's just no beating a great Kurt Russell performance. The isolation, the sense of paranoia, the dire nature of their situation, Morricone's score, the dread-filled atmosphere and mood... it's all perfect. On top of all that, we get Bottin's amazing and grotesque effects work. I still think this film contains the best special effects in any film to date. I love Alien, but there's no comparison IMO.
